Getting There

For an easy outing beyond the Missoula city limits, try the trail at Maclay Flat. The path is wide, level and surfaced to accommodate wheelchairs. It takes you along the Bitterroot River and through adjacent meadows, with some great views of mountains around Missoula. (missoulian.com website)

The parking area and trailhead are a short distance west of the road up Blue Mountain. To get there, go about two miles south of Reserve Street on Highway 93, turn right at the Montana Athletic Club and follow Blue Mountain Road (County Road No. 30) for about 1.5 miles. You'll see the parking area on the right.

Off of Hwy 93 south of Missoula (before Lolo) on Blue Mountain Rd.

Bird WatchingGreat!

A gentle stroll through a nice combo of woods, open meadow and along the river. Wide, hard-packed gravel, and flat the whole way. I went close to dusk and had some great birding, including a great horned owl that perched only a few feet from the trail! Also LOTS of deer!

HikingGreat!No shade

some bugs towards the beginning but other than that the trail is in great shape and it was a great hike. not too long, but there's not much shade in parts of it so if it's hot out you may want to save this for another day.

Beautiful trail with beautiful scenery! Short but with a lot of picture taking it ended up being the right amount of time to enjoy the sun, wildlife and nature. Loads of mosquitoes near the river and totally FORGOT bug spray

There’s a good few spots flooded so prepare to get your feet wet or back track or go off trail if needed. Super beautiful short walk/run though!

This is always a nice walk with river view. Trail today - snow pack, slush, mud, icy in stops but still was a nice walk.
