Perfect hike for families (my ten-year-old son enjoyed it), although lots of small hills, so a decent amount of work for two miles. Before getting to Johns Lake you walk by a small pond (slightly off the trail), which is ideal for exploring and looking for frogs. Johns Lake is beautiful, surrounded by trees with the mountains in the background. Finally you walk along McDonald Creek, so see the rapids and at least one waterfall. That is the one part of the hike you’ll want to stay especially close to kids, as there is a very steep drop-off along the trail.

We headed up to the lake via Lake McDonald Lodge. Lovely hike in the trees to the lake. Crossed the bridge and hiked along the river. Such a beautiful trail and views. Only saw one other group.

Beautiful trail through gorgeous dense forest. The trail brushes up against the lake briefly by the real treat is the series of waterfalls and rapids that followed towards the end of the trail.

A very scenic lovely easy trail in the Forrest and along the river with falls. Signage is lacking.

Hike is quick and beautiful. Lake is nice, but views are limited with many trees. Signage is tricky. Take the routes where horses aren't allowed. Cross the road and walk up to the parking lot and down to the bridge to cross McDonald Creek. At the end of the Loop, walk back towards McDonald Creek and follow the road back to the Going-To-The-Sun Road. Perfect for kids!

Nice trail. Shaded all the way.

Some ambiguity with signage while on trail. Beware of signs for a horse loop which is the wrong way. Stay with signs toward avalanche. .

pretty, especially the part by the creek, but had to walk up from mcdonald lodge as going to the sun road was not open past there - so added 3 miles to our hike! Early may -

This is a beautiful hike. Very short and easy but pretty. Bring your camera. We originally intended to hike the McDonald Creek trail but got lost on to this one. Not the best signage there. We went with the flow and finished this one instead. The creek and some of the falls are spectacular.

Trail is poorly marked. We ended up following the horse trail because the loop to Johns Lake is not clearly marked (stay on Avalanche trail). What you get to see is great! McDonald's fall and Johns Lake were both beautiful! Could've done without all the horse poop.

Easy hike. Don't expect much from the lake bit the river has some beautiful views and I enjoyed going through the tunnel.

This is one of my favorite hikes. It is an easy walk through beautiful old growth forest. John's Lake has lots of bugs, but beautiful scenery. A photographer's dream! The signage coming down to McDonald Creek is poor but if you follow the river you will make it through. Several times on this hike you share the trail with horses.

The trail is excellent and the footing fine. The part on the lake side of the road goes through beautiful forest - just as good as Trail of the Cedars without any of the people. While it continues on the other side of the road and river, it is poorly signed on that side. As a consequence we ended up following the horse trail well away from the river. Kind of a bummer, but wasn't a big deal. Just remember to stay closer to the river following any primitive trails. If it weren't for the lack of signs on the river side, I'd give this 4 stars...

A good hike to see some beautiful nature and stretch your legs. It's short and not difficult at all. It has some great picnic spots. I'd recommend this trail for families. Pack bug spray!
