Note: The bridge near the end of the lake trail is removed in the winter, so hikers cannot get all the way to the final lake. A beautiful hike to a glacial lake beneath a massive melting glacier. This is one of the most beautiful hikes in the entire National Park. The wonderfully maintained park trail will take you past beautiful lakes onto steep hillsides with sweeping views of waterfalls and glaciers all around you. You will probably see a lot of wildlife on the trip as well so be ready with your camera. When you get to Grinnell Lake you will see icebergs (no joke) floating in the lake from the rapidly retreating Grinnell Glacier. It is not advisable to walk on the glacier as there are crevasses but if you are careful and are there during the late summer the crevasses should be very visible and you can take a very cautious stroll onto the ice.

We veered towards the lake by accident when trying to hike to Grinnell Glacier (I thought the lake was the overlook you normally see), and I’m so glad we did. The lake was quiet in the morning, with very few people there (with everyone going up to the glacier). It was an easy peaceful walk that would be great for folks of all ages and experience. In the sunlight, the water was super blue and calm. We also saw a moose on the trail. Someone else pointed it out to us, or we might’ve missed it because she was in the brush and eating, almost completely buried in greenery. When you return from the hike, keep your eyes peeled near the bridge. There’s a sign to a very special view, only 0.1 or 0.2 mi out of the way. If you’re already planning on going to the glacier, I recommend wandering down here first, or afterwards. It’s cool to see the lake from the bottom AND the top. Hiked July 15, 2019.

The foot bridge near the end of the lake trail has been removed for the season so you can’t get all the way to the lake

We hiked this beautiful trail on 9/25. Two scenic lakes are by the trail. Once we got about a mile from Grinnell lake a nice couple let us know the bridge was out at the lake. We saw mountain goats & big horn sheep from a distance. No up close sightings.

Lovely hike on 9/20, and we were able to see the Grinnell Glacier from more than one vantage point. Observed a few mountain goats from afar.

Very windy, rainy day and clouds near the glacier. But worth the Great hike. Not much elevation change so not challenging, but gorgeous views. A few pit toilets along the way was handy. Had a nice size black bear in trail about 50 foot ahead of us. Stood up to smell, and typical for a black bear, it ran off into the brush. Fun to see the wildlife.

Best experience in the rockies! For my wife and I, this was the most exciting of our hikes in Glacier Nat'l Park. The forest was lush, various sounds were mysterious and stimulating. We began the journey on Piegan Pass Trail near Many Glaciers Hotel. This added a little elevation to our trip. The weather was perfect...crisp and chilly. So we started out with warm jackets and eventually peeled the layers away. Fantastic views...no wonder this place is named "Many Glaciers"!

This was a great hike to do for novice hikers who over did it the past two days. Definitely recommend. We did see a bear, moose and a mountain goat. I also highly recommend talking to a park ranger prior to hiking anywhere in glacier, they taught us how to use bear spray, and tips to use to avoid bears.

This was a beautiful hike! Not too hard but it is long so be prepared for a 7 mile plus stretch. The views are breathtaking, especially when you reach the lake. It's a great alternative for those who don't want to do the 10 miles to the glacier.

Part of the trail was closed to bear activity, but we just went on the other side of Lake Josephine. On our way back we decided to take the boat back across Lake Josephine fir something different to do. We did see 4 mountain goats at the top of the ridge from across the lake on our way back while waiting for the boat. We did need our binoculars to see them though. It was an easy trail and Lake Grinnell was beautiful.

We took the 8:30am express boat from Many Glacier Hotel that shortened this relatively flat and happy trail to the beautiful lake for a 5 and 10 year old and their grandparents. We took the short diversion uphill to view Hidden Falls and we are glad that we did. Grandparents and kids took the 11:45am boat back to Many Glacier Hotel, and we went up the Grinnell Glacier Trail and we were granted priority access on the boat at 3:45pm. All were happy.

Perfect hike for taking the grandsons - ages 2 and 3! The lake is gorgeous! Beautiful spot to relax, play and take pics. After the suspension bridge take the high trail (stay left) to get to the lake as the lower trail bridges have washed out.

Great hike! Beautiful views, lots of wildflowers, and Grinnell Lake is absolutely gorgeous! Bring your bug spray, the mosquitoes are hungry. I would totally do this hike again.

We got into the park by 9 and parking at the trailhead was only 3 spots left. There were other areas available to use for this hike or the glacier hike. The flora was abound in bloom today while hiking from the trailhead to the lake. The trail was busy but not crowded. The ranger told us they had recently rerouted the trail near the end to higher level due to the old trail was always in need of maintenance. The view was enjoyable and the wind made it feel cool. Make sure you visit the Hidden Falls before you leave.

This is a pretty easy walk with amazing views at the end. The Many Glacier area was full by the time we arrived (and had been closed) but we got lucky to catch a ride both in and out from, and back to, the entrance.

The views at a couple of lookouts and end were great but the trail surrounding lake Josephine was mosquito central with no view, just plants all around. Thousands of mosquitos every step. I wore long pants and jacket with hood and my hands hiding in pockets as much as I could and I still got dozens of bites on my hands from taking them out occasionally. I’m not sure if it’s the usual situation or our day today. The trail is still a bit muddy from recent rain but okay with hiking boots. There are grizzly bear poop at many points on the trail and hikers have seen grizzly today. Bring bear spray.

Did this as an offshoot from the Grinnell Glacier, so from the junction the hike is easy and a solid gradual gain. Tons of mosquitoes so bug spray if you have it. Grinnell lake is nice but can get crowded.
