We started late in the day so it got a little cool, but that didn’t take away from the beautiful scenery. Other reviewers weren’t exaggerating when they said the beginning 3/4 mi was straight up, but the rest was fine. We were the only ones on the trail, and made lots of noise so didn’t encounter anything we weren’t prepare to see. Our dog appreciated the small critters we saw, a chipmunk and a couple of squirrels. The meadow before the lake was gorgeous, as was the lake itself. Neither of us had experienced a crystal clear echo before, and it was glorious!

The first 3/4 of a mile is pretty much straight up, but then it gets easier. Beautiful lake at the end. Bring a picnic or snack to enjoy on the giant rocks. Much easier on the return trip. Dogs loved it. You cross two little springs where they can get a drink.

If you go to Lower Cold Lake I highly recommend the short trek to upper cold lake. It is kind of tricky to find (many fallen trees, over grown trails, etc) but most of the trails that split off seem to lead there. The view was gorgeous and well worth the adventure. We made it to Upper Cold Lake around 11 am today (sunday) and had the lake to ourselves. Also seems to be great fishing.

One of my favorite trails in the Seeley-Swan! The road to the trailhead is in great condition and can be accessed by all vehicles. As others have commented, great ready to climb in the first hour. We did this hike on July 11, 2020 We saw a few beargrass along the trail and the views at the lake are worth the trek up! And yes, absolutely bring bug spray for the last half mile and any time you may spend at the lake. Be advised, there aren’t a ton of great access points to sit on the lake, so if it’s a busy day, you may not have a great spot to sit right on the water.

Beautiful lake. Little muddy and overgrown in a couple places but overall really nice. Definitely bring bear spray! Will try it again when it’s not raining. Most of the climb is in the first 3/4 of a mile, so that part will get your blood pumping a little. Road to trailhead is excellent

Lots of snow. Had to park a mile from trailhead due to snow. Hiked to the lake but almost entire trail was covered in snow, a few feet deep towards the top. Lake was still frozen over

This is a great trail for beginners, we did it with my five year old. We snacked on huckleberries along the way. The hike was peaceful.

I’m not sure where this got the easy rating. Those people clearly forgot the whole 800ft incline in the first 0.7 miles. Anyway, this trail was gorgeous, shady, and the lake was breathtaking. Clearest water I’ve ever seen. It was a moderate hike though.

Dog friendly! Hike in was good - most of elevation gain is first half of the hike. Pretty and woodsy landscape throughout. Definitely worth the end destination. Lake was pretty shallow when we were there - clean clear and beautiful - great for swimming. Did not fish. Loved the views. Wish there was a sign or trail to upper cold creek. Attempted a trail to the right but way over grown so turned around. No bug spray needed - went mid August.

Gorgeous lake at the end of this trail. Moderately steep for the first half, then levels off. No views until the end, but wildflowers and wild huckleberries in abundance. Amazing kaleidoscope of butterflies hanging out at the lake. Only one other hiking party on the trail.

beautiful hike, and great fishing! the trail can be hard to follow around the lakes due to fallen trees but there are usually alternative routes.

We love this trail...moderate climb for the first 3/4 of a mile then levels off. We just did this hike (5/31/19) and, unfortunately, due to snow cover, had to turn around a little more than a mile in, right at the creek crossing...still not disappointed. There were a couple of downed trees to get around, but they were small.

The trailhead is well marked. You begin by gradually going uphill, then it flattens out as you go around the left side of the creek and around a marshy area. We didn’t try hiking to the upper lake because of a lack of time. Looking forward to hiking it again next summer when it isn’t snowing and blowing.

This was our first trail using all trails app. The trailhead was easy to find and has a bathroom. The hike starts off a slight bit steep but levels off nicely toward the top. The lake was really nice. We tried to walk to the second lake but the trail was a lot harder to follow and we were running short on daylight so we turned back. All in all great hike.

Beautiful, crystal clear lake at the end of a easy 2 mile hike. First part of trail had some fairly steep climbs but nothing really tough. Low 70’s & no bugs or fish.

This was a delightful hike! I agree, would rank this as moderate due to some steep, ongoing climbs. The bugs were present but not awful for us at the lake. Trailhead was easily accessible as well.

I think I would question the EASY rating this app gives this hike? The trail has several steep climbs to the lake but once there the beauty will make you forget about them. Be sure to wear your bug spray. Vicious mosquitos from the meadow to the lake. Well worth the time and the climb and Don't forget to listen for the Winter Wren singing along the way.

Did this hike in the rain, with a 9-year old and a 6-year old, and it was awesome! Moderately steep at first, but nothing you can’t handle with a steady pace. Beautiful scenery in a magical forest. Definitely recommend!

Very nice hike - no bugs and almost no people. Went a mile beyond maintained trail. Next time I'd go early and try for the mission range ridge.

Took this trail today, it was 86 degrees, but we still found snow near the top. Trail is quite steep the first mile, going basically straight up. Don't think that classifies it as "easy". :). Lake was beautiful, but swarms of mosquitoes make your stay extremely brief. All in all, a good hike, bring the bug spray!!!!
