A major fire burned more of the area than what was described in the trail guide. Now the entire trail from the trailhead to Johnson Lake is burned. Luckily, the edge of the burn is at the bottom end of the lake, so the campsites are still good and the lake is still clear. My son caught a lot of trout, and we ate a couple for dinner. We also camped at Upper Phyllis Lake, which wasn't so lucky in escaping the fire. As a consequence, the lake wasn't as clear as it probably once was, but my son caught fish there anyway. Campsites are few at Phyllis Lake.
