Getting There

Big Creek to Porcupine Creek Meadows is a relatively straightforward multi-day hike with minor navigation issues nearing Eaglehead Mountain. Hikers can navigate the rocks and short climbs on the cutoff between Big Creek trail and Porcupine Creek trail but horse riders should head north and then west to ascend Eaglehead Mountain. The trail down into Onion Basin/Porcupine creek can be difficult to navigate - be looking for cairns and blazes regularly.

To get to NF-132, it's about 7 miles south of Emigrant or 25 miles north of Gardiner. The road up to the Big Creek THD is passable for almost any vehicle with decent clearance. There is somewhat heavy horse/hiker traffic near the start with nearby guest ranches.

Big Creek trail is fairly unremarkable and doesn't offer fantastic views or sights. However the ascent up onto Eaglehead Mountain is not to be missed for its fantastic views of the Gallatin Wilderness. Coming down to the west of Eaglehead Mountain down into Onion Basin can be somewhat difficult if you're not paying close attention to cairns, blazes, and your map/GPS.
