From the lower parking lot this is an approximately 1 mile hike up to the big M. The road is washed out and coming down the hill it is easy to lose your footing. I was wearing some good Brooks hiking shoes and lost my footing twice. Dogs on leash tolerate the walk well. And there is a beautiful view waiting for you once you get to the top.

This trail has some great overlooks onto Butte and surrounding mountains, but like other reviewers said, the trails are poorly marked in places. Our hike ended up being closer to 3 miles.

There’s quite a few different trails to get to the top, some steeper than others, but they’re all pretty rocky with a lot of loose dirt. Wear shoes with good grip and watch your step. It’s not a long hike but the views at the top are nice! I’d suggest going early in the morning as there’s very little shade.

This trail can be in rough shape from time to time, but if you need to get your steps in, have dogs and a kid, this hike is a good one. There are always tons of people here though, so if you’re looking for seclusion, this is not the trail for you.

A very open, open-space. Great for a day with cloud coverage. Has convenient access and well-marked routes.

I’m from sea level and this was the first hike my dog and I did since moving to Montana. It’s a pretty short loop with the only real incline being up to the “M” which was kinda steep with a lot of loose rocks/ground on the way down. There is a better road down that goes right back to the parking lot. Overall it wasn’t a bad morning walk, you could take anyone up it.

I am pretty sure this is the Butte "M" trail. We start at the bottom, parking near tech, and hike to the top. You can also dive up. The trails look great for hikers and bikers. Lots of side trails. We hiked it in the winter with Snow Boots. Moderately hard because it's straight up but it's very short. About 2 miles total when we start at the bottom. An OK trail, some sticky parts in March/April, but a decent, quick little loop around the butte and easy to access... Not a personal Butte favorite, but certainly a great view of the city.
