Big Hawk Lakes Trail #722 is a 3 mile out and back trail located near Hungry Horse, Montana that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for camping, fishing & hiking and is accessible from July until October. Big Hawk trails starts off the Alpine #7 eight miles south of the Camp Misery trailhead. The trail strarts runs up off the #7 fast to climb over a gap where a small unnamed pond/lake sits next to a swamp. The trail then drops with 9 switchbacks to the Big Hawk Lakes. The decent is covered with plant over growth that stops right at the camp sites. A small trail shoots off the #722 to the top of the larger lake after about 1 mile.
It was a beautiful valley and lakes with great weather- problem was all in the trail. The drop in was hard and the overgrowth full bugs made it miserable. The trail was washed out in several places and there were three very large trail clogger trees along with five smaller trees that had to be navigated. Trail aside, the camp spots were big, open, smooth and well located next to the lakes. I posted a picture form the top of the swichbacks, the bottom of the switchbacks and of the overgrowth
