Getting There

This dolomite glade is a designated Natural Area. Located in central Jefferson County, this 225-acre site is on Route B between Cedar Hill and Hillsboro. These glades have been only lightly disturbed by human activity. The plants and animals here are similar to those that were here at the time of settlement. The glades are dominated by little bluestem, Indian grass, big bluestem and prairie dropseed. The Fremonts leather flower occurs only in this part of Missouri. These glade communities are maintained by periodic prescribed fire and cedar removal. The area features pockets of blackjack oak as well as Eastern red cedar, post oak, flowering dogwood and fragrant sumac. This dry upland forested portion is one of the least disturbed of its type in this region. The small, intermittent streams that drain the glades add diversity. For such a small area, remarkable examples exist of stream ledges, waterfalls, overhangs and pools. Many kinds of snakes and lizards, as well as larger animals such as deer and turkey, inhabit this area.

Repeated the same hike from two days ago. The trail has dried out considerably but it’s still slick in spots and there is some water in the creeks. Still one of my favorite hikes!

Definitely one of my go-to trails. Scenic… Good woods walking along with the glades. Quite a few elevation changes.Several waterfalls. When it rains you might have to get your feet wet. quite a few elevation changes. Marshall gives it two thumbs up

The trail is wet in spots and the rocks can be slippery but still a fun hike.

This is a nice little trail with a beautiful forest of pines that I love. I had come in summer but left because the weeds were higher than my granddaughter who was with me. It was much better now. It is confusing to start because the actual trail is across the street from the parking lot which also has an unknown trail that wanders from there.

Beautiful views, definitely some up and down but not too strenuous. Not too many people on the trail on a gorgeous Sunday. We will be back!

A good trail with hills scattered throughout. The trail is a good work out without having to stop and rest along the way. I was hoping for good fall colors but mainly browns.

This trail had some pretty Fall foliage. I get how it got it's name. I really wasn't a fan of the terrain. I do love a changing landscape, don't mind mud, sticks, river crossings, etc., but the small to mid-sized loose rocks that took up probably about a good half to 2/3 of the trail meant slow going at the risk of possibly falling out rolling an ankle. I think it would have been a bit better after a rain? Maybe the ground would be a bit more settled. Not sure, but definitely not my cup of tea today.

This area is a natural gem and is beautiful in any season. The trail is moderate, but easy to hike provided you own a great pair of boots and a good walking stick!
