Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a 0.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Sumner, Missouri that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

The 10,000 acre wildlife refuge offers a wide range of recreational opportunies. The actual walking trail is 1/4 mile long, is wheelchair accessible, and great for kids. The three-quarter mile nature trail begins at the visitor center and ends at the edge of Swan Lake. Interpretive signs are posted the trail. The visitor center, open weekdays daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March 1 through Oct. 15. It has a number of displays and a short video about the refuge . Fifteen miles of gravel roads are open in the refuge to vehicles and mountain bikes. One can often veiw White-tailed deer, waterfowl, wide range of wading birds, predaotory birds and other wildlife. A three-quarter mile nature trail begins at refuge headquarters and ends at the edge of the Swan Lake impoundment. Interpretive signs highlight the trail. Silver Lake and other refuge waters are home to catfish, carp, bullhead, crappie and other species. Small boats are permited on the lakes. Goose hunting is permitted annually and a number of pit-blinds are available. Three special deer hunts take place, including a deer hunt for disabled hunters. The Yellow Creek Research Natural Area is one of the few remaining areas of old-growth bottomland hardwoods in the area.

Swan Lake Wildlife refuge is a great destination to view migratory birds in season. Has a nice visitor center free to the public. The trail is simple, only 1/4 mile. It is a nice place to visit by bike as their are 10 miles of gravel roads through the Refuge. Worth the visit. Great for kids
