This trail was not laid out well and is horribly muddy. It needs to have gravel put down. If you get off of the trail you can see beautiful sandstone cliffs and outcropping but you see very few of them if you stay right on the trail. Get off of the trail where you see the edge of the hill drops off. Go around and below the drop off and you can see the beautiful cliffs, and wear mud boots!!!

If you plan on seeing waterfalls, visit after heavy rain. There are plenty of waterfalls hidden along the Sandstone Trail. It will be muddy but it will be worth it. It's a long hike so bring some water!

Nice trail, well marked. Becoming popular. Be sure to talk softly if you want to catch wildlife in the area and to be considerate of other hikers.

good change in elevation. Well marked and maintained. Peaceful walk along some creaks.

Awesome trail. My favorite place to go within an hour of Saint Louis. Very clean and scenic.

Did First Day Hike here with naturalist Eric from Missouri State Parks. He was so knowledgable and made this beautiful trail even more enjoyable. Second time we have been to to park. First time on this trail. Canyons and sandstone bridge are so pretty. We will come back.

Go to the left, clockwise to get to the canyon quicker. I have walked both down in the canyon and the path on the rim. Each are very pretty. when you make your way out of the canyon area there is a cutoff which will take you back to the trailhead in about 10 minutes. The rest of the main trail meanders thru the woods, over the ridge and through some smaller rock formations for at least another hr or so. Very pretty.

Fun trail with great scenery. Leaves made it difficult to see the trail in a few places, but it was well marked, so we didn't have much trouble.

This is a must! Did first two miles with my dog counterclockwise. A few nice spots in canyon right away after paved trail. Took the brown cut off trail due to time which was about 2 miles in and cutoff was pretty short. Wasn’t sure if people were talking about mainly hiking through the canyon most of the way to see more or what, but that what it looked like when you first reach it. . But will start clockwise next time. Would be pretty to see water. But perfect time for the colored trees.

Pretty hike! You have to go off the main trail if you really want to explore the canyons. We passed quite a few people and a few dogs.

For a hot day was a great shaded trail! It was 90 degrees but shaded with a nice breeze, it didn’t feel bad at all. We hiked down to the canyon and was well worth it. I would not go if there was a chance of rain it looks like it could flood easily.

Well-marked and mostly shady trail inside a beautiful new state park! Some extended ‘slow burn’ inclines, but generally moderate and accessible to a wide variety of fitness levels.

Good incline and beautiful wildlife and trees. We saw lizards, a lot of birds, and two two deer were right on the trail. Shaded and the park itself is a beautiful.

Made a detour off the trail, into the canyon. Worth every bit! Today was very hot, but still relativitly cool on the trail. Very nice little hike. I will be back.

Gorgeous trail! Hiked it in a little over two hours, but we took a couple detours down into the canyon. We also hiked it backwards, which I enjoyed more as it started difficult and then got easier. Park is well maintained and beautiful. I cannot wait to go back and hike both trails!

Enjoyed the trail. Mostly double and single track, almost all canopied. I am guessing the moderate rating is because the hills. Although just under 4 miles, the various levels of elevation made this a tough one.

One of our favorites and it’s not far from our home. Beautiful scenery and the best time to go is the Fall or Spring. You can see the canyons clearly then. Also a couple days after a rain. Then it’s not so muddy but the water is still flowing through the streams. So pretty!

Back again. Wow what a change in just two weeks. Last visit hardly any leaves, now full canopy. This is a great hike on sunny days, shaded 90% of trail. See images posted.

Two hour hike. Hilly, but very easy. Worth doing again after heavy rain

This is a beautiful hike, nice wide path, creek crossings, valley views, sandstone wall/outcroppings. Time of year, not best, but soon will be incredible. So thankful for giving people like Don who shared this treasure.
