This trail parallels the River Scene Trail on top of the bluffs before plunging into the Kiefer Creek valley. The trail then follows the south bank of Kiefer Creek. There is also a creek crossing that connects this trail with Grotpeter Trail. The trail was originally built to allow bicyclists access to the bluff area, but it is also an excellent hiking trail. Features along the trail include beautiful ridge top views, fern covered bluffs and a gravel strewn creek bed. The trail is named in honor of the Lone Wolf Club, a speak easy/tavern from the historic resort era. The club is adjacent to the park near the trail on private property.
Nice views
My first time hiking and I thought it was not only easy enough but beautiful. I saw the bluffs with the river view and a creek bed. Lots of great photo opportunities
Quick hike; good hill factor and the views from the top are soooooo worth it!
Great trail on the edge of the suburbs! Very active park, there was a trail race event going on while I was there, but still I had plenty of room to hike this route comfortably. There's some good bits of elevation gain and fabulous bluff views along the South edge. Most of the trail has plenty of room to let mountain bikers pass, but do keep aware for them coming around corners.
I was amazed by the wildlife. Deer were grazing by the side of the road as I drove into the park, as if it was a zoo, and I encountered another one which let me get within 20 feet before casually trotting away. Lots of birds flying around. I was VERY glad I brought bug spray, so don't forget yours!
Only reason it's not 5 stars is the vehicle and train traffic noise you can't really get away from. Not bad, but always there.
Great views and photo opportunities
Lovely hike along riverside! Some of the trail is on the edge of a steep cliff.
Nice trail along the river.
moderately challenging and pretty hike. 1 steep hill but the view at the end is beautiful. plenty of little kids, families, dogs, runners, and bikers. i hiked it solo and felt safe because of all the people.
Nice little trail with some challenging hills and a good variety of scenery: cliftop views, deep woods with steep sides, and a long creekside stroll.
Took a wrong turn but scenery was great.
I started out on the Lone Wolf trail and took a wrong turn onto the River Scene Trail. I noticed at about .2 mile after I should have turned and decided to keep going. Lots of great vistas overlooking the Meremac on both trails. The first .5 miles is a pretty steep incline but the views are worth it. That said, both trails could use more distinct markings. Orange and red are a little too similar for trails that intersect. Also, the River Scene Trail could use more markings toward the end. If it hadn't been for the recording feature in the All Trails app, I might still be wandering around in the woods.
Nice trail - steep incline in the beginning. Great views of the river at the top.
Excellent trail! Can't wait to try the river scene trail next.
Great hike! Very scenic with a decent workout mixed in
We enjoyed this trail a lot. Very scenic with some moderate to steeper inclines. Nice workout!
Gorgeous trail, would easily be one of my favorites if it weren't for the high amount of foot traffic. If you're considering visiting Castlewood, go early during the week. This place is PACKED on weekends! Very scenic, dog-friendly (but PLEASE pick up after your dog and keep it on-leash). Can be muddy in spots. Lots of little off-shoots to explore for scenery. I did this loop and River Scene Trail together for a nice hike. This one has a pretty steep incline at "the stairs" if you aren't entering from the west end, so be prepared. The stairs are VERY narrow and can be difficult to pass others, especially with dogs. When I went a few months ago, some of the slats on the steps were missing and my dog fell through. They seemed to have been fixed the last time I went though, just be cautious.
I prefer the Lewis & Clark trails (near Defiance, MO) only because it is far less trafficked on weekends.
Followed the red markers on the trees and ended up crossing the train tracks. Do not make the same mistake. Very misleading.
This trail was a good way to build muscles and exercise
One of the easier hikes in this park. Beautiful views
This trail felt longer than it was. It was a lovely hike.
Nice trail - some nice scenic overlooks
Lovely hike by a river and with fantastic views from the bluffs. This trail has some traffic on a Saturday morning, but overall less busy than the River Scene Trail and, in my opinion, more serene and beautiful.
Beautiful views. Good challenge for my 6 year old son.
Perfect short hike with great scenery. Valley overlook is amazing.
Great trail, well beaten, with good views. Very well populated.
IMO, one of the best parks and trails in the county. Great for a quick walk, run, or hike through a beautiful area. Awesome place to get some regular exercise.
It is dog friendly but is best to keep them on leash.
Bring bug spray during the summer. There are ticks and mosquitos.
Great trail. One of my favorites for a quick run. Really steep to start out but the views of the river from the top are spectacular. The back of the trail runs right along the river and is very nice.
Alot of fun, a little harder for a beginner like me, but beautiful veiws :)
Beautiful views and moderately challenging. We will definitely be back!
