Cedar Bluff trail, contrary to its name, does not actually go along Cedar Bluff. If you take it clockwise, the trail passes through forest and meadows before climbing to the knob of a large hill, which happens to be the highest point in the entire park. The trail then plunges back into the valley, crosses a creek and then weaves up a ridge on the opposite side of the valley. It then follows the ridge back down to the start of the loop.

Poorly maintained, poor drainage, ticks everywhere, and very overgrown in parts, several trees down, and at least one unmarked fork. 80% of it is a giant rut, double ruts from 4 wheelers, or pockmarked with hoofprints. go see the bluffs over the train tracks at the entrance and then turn back around the way you came from is my recommendation.

Running

The trail was really washed out and it was hard to get good footing with all the damage from horses and bikes which are not supposed to use this trail. Some nice views, but disappointed in this trail.

Trail as signs saying no horses, but there were quite a few. I had to dodge a lot of droppings. The horses have the trail pretty torn up in a lot of places making it difficult to walk. Will not do this trail again. Parked at Sherman beach and took the Al Foster trail 1.4 miles to the trail head.

Tough to find but decent hike. I parked at Sherman Beach Park and took Al Foster trail to Cedar Bluff trailhead. GPS will take you to private road with no where to park or way to get to trailhead.

Nothing spectacular nor expansive views, but it is very remote compared to main portion of Castlewood which is nice. I was the only one on the trail at 8a and had to hold a stick in front of my face for the entire 2 mile loop because of spiders. If you're hiking from Castlewood (under the train tracks) and heading west, the trail has been completely washed out from big erosion or a landslide between the rainroad tracks and the river. I considered trying to climb down and back up the other side, but thought better of it. The only way to get there would be to hike along the railroad tracks for awhile then find an opening down the embankment on the south side of the tracks where you jump on the Al Foster trail again.

Access off of Al Foster trail, so it is less travelled. Worth the effort.
