Ross Barnett Reservoir is a 2.3 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Brandon, Mississippi that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and fishing and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The trail is overgrown and difficult to find in many places. It may just be the time of year, but the gnats were HORRIBLE!
so I was extremely excited for this trail but walked away so disappointed. The entrance of the trail was blocked by what looked like branches that had recently been cleared for power lines nearby. once I got past that the trail clearly marked with but there is a large branch that is laying across the path. The scenery past that was pretty the path is a bit grown up. Given the time of year it was expected. I ended up not finishing the trail because I was worried about the amount of growth on the path. The trail needs to be swamped out one good time and it would be much better. I didn't have any gear to do it or would have done so. If I make a weekend trip I will swamp the trail and update the site.
Well marked and maintained trails. Super easy. Walk through ancient cypress forests and view an abundance of wildlife like white tail deer, egrets, and blue heron. Trails are mapped out with different color codes. Orange, blue, green, yellow. All of which connect to each other in cool ways. There is also a section on the yellow trail that will lead you to the banks of the pearl river with great views of the Ross Barnett spillway
