Winchell Trail is a 5.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Minneapolis, Minnesota that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Overall the hike was not easy but there were some parts that were. I tried to follow the map as closely as I could. Once you see long stairs down you are supposed to use them. That's when it gets difficult. I had to climb over a large pipe on the path and there were 1 or 2 fallen trees. Near the turn around point there were closed signs, but people still used it. The hike has a nice mix of scenery. There are great views of the river, woods, valley, regular paved walking path and beach. Some parts have fences and some don't. I do think parts would be dangerous if it was muddy or snow was on the ground though.
It was a holiday weekend. Many people on the trail; many not wearing masks. Great day, though; good looks at the river. Will go back on another day.
It was a beautiful day and we achieved a summer goal of walking the whole trail. No noticeable mosquitoes. We discussed hiking it again in the fall when there are fewer leaves so you get better river views.
This section of the grand rounds is nice biking. There are some cool neighborhood and river views here!
This was an awesome trail for staying away from the crowds. Shady, which makes it about 15 degrees cooler than on the paved Mississippi Rv Rd paths. We really only started to encounter other hikers after 12pm. 10/10 would recommend.
Hiking boots would be a good idea for a few of the unpaved areas. Some trails lead into very steep cliffs. Overall great hike near the city.
