The parking lot is hard to see, but if you go slowly on Highway 1 after turning off of Highway 61 and look to your left, you will see it. Limited parking in the small dirt lot among the trees, but worth trying to get a spot rather than parking on the shoulder of Highway 1. This trail doesn't disappoint, right off the bat you are ascending to the highest point, before descending down all the way with some level spots along the train, to the High Falls. Wear good hiking shoes or boots. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing, we hiked in late-Spring, but with all the moisture the area had it was pretty warm even with temps in the low-60's. The trail was very muddy, so be prepared for that and make sure to either walk in the grass along the side of the trail or move quickly through the mud. Watch your footing as there are several areas where you can easily slip, particularly at the beginning of the trail and near the falls.

Access to Sawmill Dome from Little Marais Road (Lake County Rd 6) is two miles west of our home. We hike this portion of the Superior Hiking Trail often. Ascent is steep from County Rd 6, about 200 feet in 1/4 mile. Steep ups and downs the whole route to MN Highway 1 near Illgen City. Worth the effort. Another wonderful access point is from Wolf Ridge Environmental Leaning Center, near Finland, Minnesota. Several trails branch off from the ELC access.
