Mississippi Headwaters Trail is a 0.4 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Lake Itasca, Minnesota that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and fishing and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

It’s funny how oddly anti-climactic it is seeing the beginning of the Mississippi. But a BEAUTIFUL spot, nice easy hike. The park has lots of information about the river & the discovery of the headwaters at an info center at this trailhead.

Very easy trail, with quite a lot of traffic. Completely worth it to see (and wade in) the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
