I love this trial! It is short, but it’s quite pretty and it’s easy. Anyone could walk on this. It’s usually quite busy, but it’s a perfect place to go!

A short leisurely walk. Walking across the rocks at the headwaters or wading across the river is a pilgrimage ever Minnesotan must make at least once in their life.

Easy, well groomed out and back that takes you along the bank of Lake Itasca. Good chance you glimpse some wildlife along the way.

Not a long walk. But it was really nice for the kids. Nice refreshing dip in the headwaters. And you can walk the river to have the full experience of the headwaters. There's a nice gift shop and little cafe that you can get sandwiches and coffee along with other beverages. They even had hard ice cream which was a nice treat. We did this small hike with 6 kids that were under five.

Fun for kids and great for families. You have a few different options to walk back to the lodge, one of which is walking through the river under some walking bridges.

It’s funny how oddly anti-climactic it is seeing the beginning of the Mississippi. But a BEAUTIFUL spot, nice easy hike. The park has lots of information about the river & the discovery of the headwaters at an info center at this trailhead.

Very easy trail, with quite a lot of traffic. Completely worth it to see (and wade in) the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

So cool to see where the Mississippi River starts. We went at sunset, so it was not too busy, but still quite a few people.
