Gorgeous rails to trails paved trail. This path takes you into the whitewater river valley from either highway 9 going north or Elgin going south. Experience is of a diverse riparian environment and the surrounding farms of this valley. I was pleasantly suprised by the scenic quality of this trail which I never initially expected when I first saw the flat landscape of the parking areas and trailheads. Some highlights of this section are the historic creamery in Viola, the large and varied amount of bird life, one particularly beautiful farmstead with large white pines and horses and of course the delightful river and valley. Definitely a top notch trail worth checking out. The other section of this trail extends from Elgin to Plainview and is overall quite different. In Elgin you pass through downtown, next to the giant 13 story grain elevators, near a historic creamery building, and over the White Water River. The section in between Elgin and Plainview takes in spectacular views of the rolling plains of corn/bean farms and grazing cattle. In Plainview you pass next to a lumber yard and golf course and end at a memorial for Soldiers from the area who served in the same regiment and were massacred in a particularly awful Civil War battle. This section is excellent as well and worth exploring.

Low 50s with light rain most of the 15 miles. Pleasant fall foliage and fields in various stages of harvest. You have t know what you’re hiking. Of course it’s flat and rural with not much else. But there are plenty of reek crossings and the Elgin drop at roughly 10 miles has a nice covered rest area with port a John, benches and tables. Walked right next to massive grain silos at the coop. That was cool.

Quiet and peaceful with little streams and farms. It is a flat paved path which I would definitely rate as easy. I'm not sure why it was rated as moderate. It's a straight path so you have to turn around and go back if you're walking.

really nice walking trails. Well paved and maintained. partly shaded, was really nice for walking with our dogs on leash. Nothing too exciting or scenic, but very nice. there are several streams that go under the trails but no access for the dogs to get a drink or Wade.

Hard surface bike trail on old railroad bed in great shape. Hiked 10.5 miles out and back from south trailhead. Basically a great trail for walking dog or biking. Not much to see. Elev change 220 ft. Not a hiking trail.

This is a beautiful, well-maintained country trail that takes you by farms and a couple of quaint small towns (Viola and Elgin). Currently, the trail is only 13 miles, but is planned to continue south to Eyota to be 15 miles in all. On the particular day I rode this trail, there was a very strong south wind that made the southbound trip a little difficult, but the northbound trip very fun and VERY quick! There is a bit of an acrid smell around a couple of larger farms in the vicinity (probably made worse by the wind). There is a slight trail detour in Elgin, but the signs are easy to follow. There are also bathrooms and rest stops along the way. In all, I really enjoyed this trail.
