Carlton Peak via Superior Hiking Trail is a 7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Schroeder, Minnesota that features a river. The trail is rated as moderate and is primarily used for hiking and running. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Any portion of the SHT is going to be great, but when there’s a mountain overlook it’s even better. There are some icy portions during the final climb, but overall it’s a pretty steady elevation gain and generally scenic trail. The round trip with the temperance river hiking club trail is my recommendation.
Beautiful section of the SHT. 27° at start of hike. 41° by the end. Snow covered and slickernshit on the verticals but still a great day on the trails
Great trail with a fantastic views. It was not as crowded as the Bean n Bear Lake
One of the better summit hikes on the north shore. Tofte Peak had eve n better views than Carlton. Highly recommend the short jaunt there. Trail is mostly flat until the last half mile scramble up. Not quite a 14er but not bad for MN!
Took the shorter out-and-back starting at Britton Peak Trailhead, a little over 3 miles round trip. Tofte Overlook is worth checking out too.
Absolutely beautiful. I definitely recommend hiking over to see Tofte Peak. That was my favorite part.
Great! Wear long hiking pants as some of the brush is taller. Beautiful views and would definitely do it again!
An ambitious trek to one of the best views on the North Shore. I consider myself an intermediate level hiker and found this to be a solid test yet totally doable. The last half mile is a good scramble and the payoff at the end is worth it. It’s hard to beat the Temperance River Gorge as a setting for the end of this one.
