Getting There

This is a beautifully maintained paved rail-trail with three access sites: Lumberjack Park, Van Wormer Road, and Stroebel Road. This trail is well shaded, making it perfect for warmer weather rides. The trail passes through wooded areas, farm land, and the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. There are viewing platforms, shelters, and bridges along the trail providing plenty of opportunities to rest or enjoy the view. Accessibility: The trail surface is paved asphalt, smooth, and typically at least six feet wide. The estimated grade is flat (all 1% or less) so this trail will likely be navigable for most wheelchairs/mobility equipment or strollers. There are benches along the way for resting.

Trailhead Locations: 6225 Stroebel Rd. James Township 2998 Van Wormer Rd. Swan Creek Township Lumberjack Park - 401 East Water St. St. Charles

Love this all paved trail! Rode from St. Charles and turned on Thomas Trail to get lunch at Culvers. We will be finishing the last few miles into Saginaw next season.

Well kept and well paved trail! I parked at Van Wormer and cycled the whole trail, about 19 miles. You can add some distance by taking the Thomas trail that intersects with this one.

Road bikingGreat!

Starting at the Stroebel Rd parking lot to St Charles is 20 miles round trip. Definitely one of the prettier rail trails I've ridden. It can be busy at times so if you're riding, be prepared to slow down & let others know you're coming. Everyone is usually pretty easy-going & will move over.

Easy, straight, well paved path. Some shaded sections. Can be annoying to keep up a pace due to numerous road crossings. Not too busy during weekdays, so get your sprints in then. Weekends can be a bit more busy with other activities. 19.6 miles from start to end and back.

Went for a really pretty walk today. Lots of flowers in bloom. Clean trail with a good mix of sun and shade. I’m excited to see more of this trail on my bike!

Love this trail!! Such a smooth and beautiful ride! I bike it, but it would be a GORGEOUS walk. Bridges, blacktop pavement, rivers, wildlife and shrubbery, lots of shade and some open sun!...this trail rocks. It connects to the Shields Township Trail. If you get bored of the straight Rail Trail take the 3 miles of curvy Shields Township Trail to mix it up.

Trail is always well maintained. Unfortunately if it snows, it is not cleared. So plan ahead, and bring the right footwear in the winter. Summer time, it is absolutely gorgeous.

Clean, well maintained, and good for everything. We bike, walk, run, and rollerblade on this trail with and without our dogs. The new Thomas trail spin off is nice to go down and watch the sunset.

We biked the whole trail - there and back. It went through the woods almost all the way. It was mostly flat. There were good scenic stops along the way and there was a gazebo at one end where we ate lunch. Over all it was a good trail.

Such a beautiful trail and so well maintained. Great for hot days as there is plenty of shade along the trail. Trailheads have beautiful landscaping and offer plenty of places to rest and enjoy the sites. Great bathroom facilities at Van Wormer Trailhead with running water.
