HikingGreat!

Loved this trail! We did it after a big storm so the falls were flowing rapidly. We parked at the parking lot, followed the "falls" sign down to the river, crossed the suspension bridge and the river (the trail crosses through the river which may be difficult with higher water levels), walked on the east river trail upstream to south boundary road, crossed the road, and came back on the west river trail. Enjoyed this direction because the east side trail is harder/steeper and walking upstream on this side gives you great views of all 3 of the falls. The west side trail is easier and mostly boardwalk. We walked 2.5 miles and it took 2 hours but we were taking our time. You could also park near south boundary road and do the trail in reverse. Overall a beautiful trail, well marked, and not too many bugs, so highly recommend.

This was a phenomenal trail! Wow! We started on the East trail, crossed the suspension bridge and came back on the West trail. The East trail gets you closer to the water, the West side has a wonderful wooden walkway. Went in the evening, there were no bugs. It was an excellent little loop.

We hiked this with our nieces and they loved it! Very kid friendly, as it has boardwalks abs stairs. We walked out to Lake Superior and then back towards the falls. Perfect for a 3 and 5 year old!

Trail has awesome views along the river. If you take the East trail, just be sure to know that in the winter and spring the trails don’t connect like the map says cuz the water runs to high. The west trail has the nice boardwalks and lookouts

Snowshoeing

This was my second time setting out from the west side of the river. Wish I would have read the reviews here, as the east side doesn’t have the wooden stairs and boardwalk. The structures made the hike more difficult as they’re currently coated in snow and ice. I wore snowshoes, but would recommend yaktraks or something similarly light with good grip. If you plan to continue along the North Country Trail, you’ll be needing snowshoes as the path (at least forged by humans) dramatically decreases. Also worth making a detour to the lake to see the icy waves. Really beautiful hike!

Hiked from south boundary road up east side and back west side. Forgot to turn off recording till after we got on car. Petty falls and rapids from both sides. Crossing at lake side was across east branch of river. Couldn’t do this in spring.

Spectacular! Hiked both sides of the river. Your BEST pictures will be from the east side. Most of the falls slightly face the east. Not as good of views from the west , boardwalk side. I was a little surprised at that. East side is difficult in spots. If time is limited I highly recommend this one and the Escarpment Trail. I so want to come back and hike this again! Thx Bruce

The falls are beautiful but you get a better view if you don’t follow this route but continue on by the river. It’s not really a loop, either, unless you want to walk along the road for half of it!

Sometimes great. Starting from the lot on the west side, there's that vibe where the authorities want you to enjoy nature, just not TOO much. Everything is boardwalks and fences and stairs. It's more intimate both upstream and across the bridge. For the best short hike cross the bridge right away and explore the island.

Fairly simply trail with great views and many small waterfalls. Easy to go for a quick swim in the river too. The eastern loop of this trail is almost all boardwalk.

I started by going over the swinging bridge, went north (left) to the lake and doubled back and headed up the east side. Returned via the west side for a loop back to the parking area. Beautiful trail. Wonderful views of three falls. East side was a little muddy and slightly washed out, but worth it. Not much traffic on the trail today.

Nice walk along the river with steps in some places. Lots of exposed roots, so watch your step! We hiked in early June and the mosquitoes were not bad here. Well marked trail, mostly level with a few uphill scrambles. Moderate.

Hiked the east trail from the south boundary road. You can park there near the bridge and get on the trail there. It’s a beautiful hike along the river and falls. The east trail is more rugged than the west trail but not difficult. Moderate would be an appropriate rating in my opinion. Hike this trail to Lake Superior and back and you will have gone appropriately 2 1/4 miles. One of my favorite hikes. Our dogs love it

Awesome trail to hike and the waterfalls are gorgeous. One side of the trail has lots of ups/downs but has better spots for taking pictures. The other side of the trail is mainly boardwalk. Definitely worth checking this trail out if you’re visiting the Porcupine Mountains.

This loop map is incomplete! This only shows the road and the West river trail. There is a matching East river trail on the other side that is definitely worth the hike! Refer to the paper maps passed out at the entrance to see both loops. I highly recommend going North (toward the lake) for the East Trail. It has some very steep embankments that would have been torture to climb up but were okay to go down ;) Lots of stairs and boardwalks on the West river side, more rustic on the East side.

1) this map doesn’t show there is an east and west trail. Make sure to do both sides of the river. 2) they give you a paper map at the entrance which shows the east trail. 3) start with the west trail to learn about the waterfalls.

Sitting on the shore of Lake Superior as I type this still on the trail. This is a beautiful and easy trail. Lots of stops along the trail to see the amazing falls. A must do for sure!

Gorgeous waterfall views. Some sections of the East River Trail are closed but remaining path is in good condition. Small amounts of up/down, I would rate it on the easier side of moderate.
