HikingGreat!

Nice well marked trail with lots of good elevation gains. Definitely take the cut off trail to Doty Cave, it was so pretty down there. Lots of wildflowers starting to bloom and the buds on the trees are starting to pop up. Some road walks but not much.

Nice short trail. No marker at the split that goes to Doty Cave or continues down the NCT.

One of the nicest sections of NCT closer to the Ohio border.

Hilly and icy, strongly recommend ice spikes in the winter, especially for log crossings over rivers.

The trail was beautiful 5/5 through the wooded sections. Beautiful terrain changes, awesome views through the bare trees and sparkling snow. There were a couple of balance beam style stream crossings, lakes, hills, absolutely gorgeous!! At about the 3.5 mile mark or so the trail follows roads which were fairly busy, ducks into the woods again by a DNR shooting range. I wouldn’t waste my time hiking the last part of the trail. The first 3.5 miles were awesome and worth the 1hr 45min drive to get here, yet I probably won’t be back as the pretty part of the trail is too short for that length of drive.

I came from Ohio on Thanksgiving morning. I didn’t realize gun laws might be different in Michigan. The trail and parking lot weren’t very marked and there were a ton of people in safety orange hunting. I decided to not go and went somewhere else instead. Looking forward to trying this sometime, though!

My wife and I hiked about 2.7 miles of the trail today. Really enjoyed it. Trail was well marked once you get in it, just hard to find while driving. Trail was well maintained and had a lot of walking up and down ravines.

September 17, 2020. This is one of the best trails in SE Michigan. Only drawback is that you can’t do more miles like Pinckney or Waterloo without walking on roads. Can’t beat it for scenery and elevation changes though. NCT chapter does a great job maintaining the trail. Only issue is the trash that collects at the Gilbert road camping area near Lake Eight. Probably locals partying at night. Wish they’d clean up after themselves. P.S. We parked at the Pittsford Rd. lot. Decided to hike the trail that’s right off the parking area. It goes about 8/10 of a mile along a nice ridge and dead ends. I’m betting there will be great views when the leaves are down. Adds 1.6 miles too. :- )

HikingGreat!

One of the coolest “local” trails to a NW Ohio native. Lots of changes in elevation, streams and lakes, and plenty of wildlife. Frogs, toads, and turtles in addition to deer, chipmunks, and squirrels. No rattlers seen/heard. Not many bugs. Fairly dry; only one slightly muddy spot worth mentioning. The large lake is secluded and gorgeous. Found an empty camp site whose fire pit was full of Gatorade bottles and empty cig packs. Besides the remnants of garbage people, the trail was awesome!

Such a fun trail in our small town! Bugs weren’t bad, did come across a rattler by the dam out of Lake Number Eight so stay alert!

I hiked this portion of the trail today and it was great. Excellent game area . You can only camp back there between Sept 10 and May 15. There are quite a few camping areas closer to Way rd and Gilbert rd ares. with fire rings and off the trail. This would be be why any weird looks are given since tomorrow is June 1. Any time you back country or disperse camp on state lands you should be aware of the rules and procedures. I have posted a picture of the rules. I also saw a MTB back there today which the trail is supposed to only be for hikers which is clearly marked at every trail head.

A nice little trail tucked away in a small town. My goal was to camp more than hike so I only did about a mile of the trail starting near Skuse road. I read a few reviews that mentioned camping spots however I didn’t see any so I ended up veering off the trail and set up camp near a small creek. I didn’t see any other backpackers and had several people that could see my camping spot from a distant hill stop and stare for a bit, so im assuming camping isn’t very common. Overall though it was a nice, peaceful trail / camping spot thats close to home.
