Island Lake Yellow Trail Loop is a 5.6 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near South Lyon, Michigan that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This trail is shared by both hikers and mountain bikers so users recommend hiking in the opposite direction of the bike traffic. If you are biking please do signal presence ahead of time. There is a fee for residents of $11 per year for a recreation passport. For non-resident the fee is of $9/daily and $31/per year.
This trail offers lots of sun and some shade. Currently, it smells of incense with its warm dead leaves and fresh blooms. The entire landscape has a slight green hue from the new growth. What a lovely little grand hike she was! Remember: leave no trace (that means use the switchbacks and do not cut trails)
Trail was dry. If you want to do the hiking trail and go the opposite way of the bikers start at the two pit toilets
Beautiful scenery, enough hills and valleys to keep it challenging, and we went early enough that there weren’t a ton of people!
Easy to follow. Peaceful. Much of the path follows the river. Shooting Range noise very minimal. Shared with bikes.
Beautiful hike. Lots of folks out on their fat tire bikes. Can't wait to come back and do the Blue Loop.
another nice trail... no ice, not too many other people, but all the dogs I saw were off leash which would have been bad if I wasn't a dog person. Not sure why everyone was hiking the same way as the mountain bikers. Start your hike by the restrooms. Basically the opposite way this map tells you to go. This was you can spot mountain bikers and get out of their way.
Trail was well marked, easy to follow. Make sure to start in opposite direction of mountain bikers so you can see them coming to step off trail..it’s hard to hear them in the snow so keep your head up;) Enjoyable hike with a few decent inclines, nothing too challenging.
