Hurricane River to Log Slide is a 7.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Grand Marais, Michigan that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from April until September.
Nice views of the lake. The first 2 miles are a gravel road then you’re in the woods until log slide.
Great trail - there were only a few spots with some steep climbs, but certainly very doable. Follows along the lake as well as through the forest and has several spots with boardwalks. We had perfect weather and started from the Hurricane River Campground going to the AuSable Lighthouse and then onto the Log Slide. Saw lots of color and enjoyed the sound of the waves along the lakeshore. Not too much traffic either. Highly recommend this trail!
Amazing trail. Started at Log Overlook and headed to the Lighthouse, still 5+ miles round-trip. Great views, only about 3 sections with any significant elevation change. Heard and saw plenty of birds, noted about 20 species of fungus including corals and some lion's mane, almost picked up a rock before realizing it was a baby turtle! Contains a couple nice wooden walkways, woodlands, fern covered wetlands, some more piney sections. Glad I didn't drive an hour farther than I had to, this hike had it all.
The first and last quarter of the trail (gravel road from the Hurricane river parking lot to the Au Sable lighthouse) is nice enough but nothing fabulous. A much better choice would be to park at the Log Slide and hike the 2 miles west to the Au Sable lighthouse and then just hike back. If you did just this part, I would give this hike 5 stars. The part between the Log Slide and the lighthouse is on a lovely wooded path that frequently skirts the lake. It was not super crowded mid-week. It has some steps, a crooked wooden bridge, some wooden boardwalks and lots of wild flowers. We really liked this part of the trail. No bugs at all in mid-August.
This was one of the best treks everrrr! Only issue was with bunch of flies in the last 1 mile stretch!
The first 1 1/2 miles from trail head to lighthouse is all a gravel road with 2 lake access points marked "shipwreck"...recommend trying the 2nd shipwreck as you go up to the shoreline and go right along the beach for about 100 yards and you will see the shipwreck. The lighthouse was really nice, but that area was the worst bug experience of my life with the biting flies. The next 2 miles after the lighthouse to the Log Slide is the traditional nature path through the woods with some boardwalks. It has some amazing cliff views of the lake and sand dunes. I actually did the 300 foot descend down the Log Slide to the lake and the all the back up. It was one of the most challenging dune climbs I ever did. The water and beach at the bottom was amazing.
The views are amazing. Totally worth it. But be warned it’s very buggy, the black flies are relentless and weren’t deterred by bug spray.
Great trail! Easy traveling for the most part; there is a section with some decent elevation gain but it ends pretty quickly. Pretty views of the forest on trail with occasional glimpses of Lake Superior. The view at the end when you get to the log slide is incredible.
a very nice trail with beautiful views Lakeshore along with pictured rocks Woods sand dunes really nice Trail got a little hilly but as long as you're expecting it and you're in pretty good shape you won't have any trouble the beginning mile of the trails pretty boring but you appreciate it walking back once you're tired you know you're last miles going to be easy Ranger at the Lighthouse was nice Campground was great very nice quiet we stayed in the upper but there's also lower along the lake
