Description
Waypoints (2)

Start at Wetmore pond parking off of Big Bay Rd. for a south-side approach (there's no sign at turn-in, so listen to GPS). Make sure to check the map at the beginning, showing where the 3 trails lead. You will take the one on the far right (Hogback). Keep right at the split 50 yards in (left goes back to the parking lot). The first part is through woods with a rocky trail - you'll go over 2-3 wooden planks, duck under 2 orange-marked trees, pass a spider-web shaped overturned tree trunk and open onto flat-face rock area for the second park. Stick to the left side, and you'll find the continuation of the trail. Follow the blue plates as there will also be white plates, and green paint marks. The third part is a woodsy with some swampy area with wooden crossing planks. You will cross a short bridge and a snowmobile trail just beyond it. If you see signs for the Lily Pond loop, you've gone the wrong way! Turn back, and you should find small signs/placks pointing to Hogback. You should pass a narrow, quick-flowing stream. From here, a steady ascent starts and you are in part four of this trail. You will reach the end of the blue plate trail (indicated by 2 blue plates with 2 white squares on them) - you can keep following the white tags from this point forward. You will reach a point right under the summit, where it seems like you can go straight up - don't. The trail will snake around to the left. Follow this, and it will get you to the summit. Last part is a steep, rocky climb needing both hands.

This was a great hike, beautiful views from the top. The directions in this description are perfect and I recommend taking a screenshot you can refer to when you go.

I loved this hike! It has a ton of rocks on the path, so definitely wear hiking shoes with ankle support. The view is definitely worth it!

Great hike! We had no problems finding the summit which is marked the whole way with BLUE marks on the trees/rocks. The last part is a little steep but it’s not very long and worth it because the view from the top on a clear day is beautiful. Not that many people - we went yesterday (Tuesday) - so social distancing not a problem at all. Highly recommend this one!

Great!

An awesome trail. Views from the top are beautiful. Google maps brought us to the wrong starting point. AllTrails map was very accurate. We finished the trail with a 7 and a 9 year old. They loved the last part of the trail when reaching the summit.

Pictures don’t do this trail justice. And the last 30+ minutes aren’t moderate. Great hike, probably one of the hardest I’ve ever done. The 360 degree view from above Marquette is incredible. It is worth it to get to the top, and I’m thinking that I probably made it a little harder than it needed to be. If I missed an easier trail around the top versus straight up, I’m glad I did. Great challenge with a view that made it all worth it.

Follow the white tags!! It is marked well (recently), except to know which color to follow. The map at the trailhead shows the trail in red. If you follow the blue tags you are doing the Lily Pond trail.

See the description. I read up before-hand, but still got lost twice! Just keep in mind, FOLLOW THE BLUE TAGS (If starting from Wetmore pond parking lot off Big Bay rd.) It's a really fun trail, just need to know where to go. The view at the top is amazing! Wear shoes with good grip (proper hiking boots), a keep your hands open for the final climb.

Great trail but make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and be prepared for some rock scramble. Also pay attention to the AllTrails maps as there were a few time we got lost and almost took NCT trail. If you bring a dog, make sure he/she feels comfortable climbing on steep rocks or have a harness that you can easily pick them up in.

Probably our favorite hike in Marquette. Trails are marked well and it’s absolutely gorgeous at the top. Go all the way to the very top! The views are amazing!

Excellent trail mixing cross country hiking with some moderate strenuous parts towards the top with a rocky scramble. The summit gives you one of the better views in the state.

Nice hike, not well marked on all forks but we found our way. It's difficult climbing at some points but the view is worth it.

Trail was in pretty decent shape. There was a couple of muddy spots, a lot of rocky areas and bugs but the view was gorgeous!

Worth the hike for the view. Need to watch steps due to ruts and rocks. It was gorgeous views. I would recommend it if near there. The trail divides follow blue to the right to get to summit.

My husband and I throughly enjoyed this trail! It’s beautiful the whole way, and the summit is absolutely breathtaking. A little icy, slippery coming down, but we were also wearing sneakers. Great find!
