Getting There

This route will take you along the wider, more popular walking path called the Reservoir Trail around the bulk of reservoirs on the west side of I-93. This path keeps you closer to the water bodies than the other paths in the reservation and the path is preferred by the casual walker who just wants some away time from the city in the woods.

Map of the area http://www.fells.org/visit/map.cfm Friends of the Fells Homepage http://www.fells.org/

From Boston get off I-93 at exit 33 and head north on the Fellsway until you see the entrance for the parking area.

Really beautiful loop trail that has multiple entry points. Hiking shoes/boots are nice to have on this one but you could definitely do it in running shoes. Stepping on rocks and roots along the way but never feels too strenuous. We entered at 9am and it took us just under 3 hours to do the full loop at a relaxed pace. Didn’t feel too busy at all. Long stretches of trail to ourselves. 95% of people had masks and were good at putting them on when passing by. The odd mountain biker coming through—they’re pretty respectful of hikers. Plenty of room to step aside if need be. Just a great spot to get amongst the trees and take in views of the reservoirs. Feels very peaceful along most of the trail :)

A beautiful area outside the city and well marked trails. The orange trail was difficult and dangerous to hike at certain points because it is narrow and popular with mountain bikers. The wider dam roads were pleasant to walk but unclear if it was open to public use or not. Parking lots were all full mid-day on a Sunday in March. Plenty nice but I wouldn’t call it peaceful and likely will look for something more secluded in the future.

This trail is gorgeous, but at times very poorly marked. There are numerous reviews with different distances for this trail because it’s very easy to lose your way. Besides that, it’s beautiful and enjoyable.

Great trail for an afternoon hike! It was mostly wooded, providing lots of shade. We are beginner hikers and this was a great easy to moderate trail. It took us 3 hours to complete.

Trail was well kept — took us a little less than three hours to complete. It is on the moderate-side it easy — a fair amount of up and down, so your legs will feel it (in a good way) if you are a beginner hiker. There aren’t very many beautiful views, but it’s a really nice way to get out of the city and into the woods. Bugs were pretty minimal in late May but they do exist, we would bring bug spray next time.

Great property, wish I lived closer. Decided to "peakbag" as many of the hills as possible. Started clockwise across the North Reservoir dam to Bear Hill (climbed the lookout tower) then over to Winthrop before witnessing a wonderful engagement proposal on the ledge near Wanapanaquin Hill. That was really sweet, took some pix for them as the lighting was perfect! Turned south from there to Gerry Hill then across the dog play area to a series of no-name hills before returning to car. A bit of bushwacking on this trek but it was easy. Lovely all around!

Decent walk around the reservoir. It was a bit more challenging than I expected it to be. The trails were a bit hard to find at times but course correction wasn't difficult to get back on track. Parking is limited so get there early.

We locked our bikes up near Gate 12, and started the hike from the south. Some parts of the trail are well marked with orange/red markers, other parts were a little harder to follow. The trail had some moderate parts that had some inclines and rocks, but it was overall easy-moderate. Surprisingly, the trail doesn't hug super close to the reservoirs, so you don't have water views most of the time. It was very nice though; it took us 2.75 hours at a regular pace.

A pleasant hike/walk. Well paved trail. We walked during most of the trail. There are frequent ups and downs. An easy hike. Pack a book, you'll find plenty of scenic sports to stop, picnic, relax and read a book.
