Getting There

A lovely afternoon hike. The variability in the terrain makes this hike a little more interesting and fun. There is some climbing over rocks towards the top, but nothing difficult. The pond is interesting to explore and there are additional trails that skirt around the shore.

There is no designated parking area at Woodside Drive but there is enough room for several cars to park along the roadside.

Nice loop trail, good with dogs. Icy and steep in some places, cramp-ons/microspikes recommended

Beautiful trail! Lots of different trails to walk on. I might suggest spikes since there is quite a bit of packed down snow, if you have good hiking boots you will probably be fine.

Download the map, there are a lot of options. Diverse terrain, when you're deep in it you feel isolated- but when you're on the outer edge there is noise from roads and big dogs barking at you from backyards. Was quite icy in parts.

HikingGreat!

A nice fall walk in the woods. This one was rated moderate, but was no harder than many easy paths we have hiked. We particularly enjoyed the emptiness of this path, encountering only a couple of other hikers during our three mile walk.

This is a lovely area especially this time of year (autumn). I added two miles to the mapped route by crossing Bare Hill Rd and using a connector trail to the adjoining Bowers Spring Conservation Area. You’ll not regret making this side trip if you go since the pond at Bowers Spring is a real beauty and prettier than the one in Vaughn Hills, although beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Otherwise the Vaughn Hills trail is nice. Even though there are places full of roots on the trail, the woods are interesting, and with most of the leaves down you can see rock outcroppings, gullies, and other things. Navigating the first part of the trail was a challenge. There were several blown down trees due to the wind storm earlier this week. I had to decide whether to climb over or duck under a few very large tree trunks to get to the other side.

It’s a great hike! I was very impressed with how well the trails I took were marked. I saw plenty of arrows affixed to trees to along the way (posted pic), and there were a few signs at key intersections. It was dry when I was there, but there is normally wetland throughout—I expect that it would normally be pretty buggy. Also some trails must have a lot of horse traffic, because there were a lot of piles left behind! I even saw a horse go by while I was there. Also good to note some sections of trail are a little steep, so pay attention to the map and wear good shoes.
