Neponset is a 3.2 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Boston, Massachusetts that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
All widely paved and flat. Perfect for runners and bicycle riders. It should be more picturesque when the leaves come back. Most of the trail is very close to active subway tracks and stations. The parts by the river and salt marsh are good. So is the view of the old Baker Chocolate Factory. A good winter walk. There are some additional nice trails around the beginning of this route in the other direction and past the farthest point out.
I really enjoyed walking here with my mom and her dog. It is a fully paved walking path, there are no trees, you will be in the full sun while walking. There is a small covered picnic area however where you can get some shade for a little bit. Nice view of some water and the flowering bushes and trees in the spring are stunning!
This is a nice and well maintained trail, we love to visit here with our dog. I would not recommend letting your dog off leash, there are just too many people and too many places to run and hide or get very muddy. The whole area around this trail is great as well.
My Faithful Hound Luke and I went on this walk in early January; much of the path was under snow and there were patches of perilous black ice on which we nearly came a cropper several times. It was nineteen degrees and terribly chill. The trail was signposted as being closed for reconstruction at several points, with suggestions that one traverse at ones own risk! However, we were walking in the wake of two elder people who were familiar with the trail and wholly unperturbed by these dire warnings! As it was, the un-constructed parts were differentiated only by not being tarmac, but rather compacted sand and shale - under ice, it made not one jot of difference. The frozen conditions were a large part of the fun of this walk. The river was often frozen, and there were peculiar, geometric ice sculptures. The frosted river grass was papyrus-y and beige, and made for a most surreal landscape. At the end of the walk, we went a little awry, and found ourselves near Tenean Beach. On Saturdays, there is wine tasting here at the winery, so might provide a welcome detour if you don't have a Little Yapper in tow. Also, one could end the walk in the Adams Inn - the terrace overlooking the river is most charming on a summer's afternoon.
