Mount Watatic is a 2.2 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Ashburnham, Massachusetts that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from April until September.
Fun hike with a good variety of terrain. Although icey, Karah and I took our time and hiked without issue without spikes or snowshoes. Be wary of icey conditions before future trips. This mountain was highly trafficked. It was busy for a cool January day. Not the most secluded summit, but a beautiful one, for sure. We ascended the Midstate, northbound, then returned south on a trail marked with blue arrows that led back to the parking lot. Favorite Spots: 1.) At the base of Watatic, a bridge made of wooden planks spans a stream. Very fun to traverse. 2.) Summit (obviously). 3.) Heading north on the midstate, the roots of trees protrude like a staircase. Cool to walk up and helpful while ascending.
Up watatic normal then down Ashby wildlife side and to nh border and wapac trail intersection. Snowshoes may help?
my recorded path makes for a fun addition to a short trail. Not hard at all.
awesome trail. good climbing at times if going counterclockwise.
A little wet from the rain the last 2 days but not slippery: pretty crowded. Had to park across the street but everyone was polite and following social distancing.
Main Parking lot was full so we drove down the street to other parking spots. It was a power line trail.....very steep....straight up to the top in about 25 minutes. Went back down the regular way and walked back on the road.
Beautiful foliage and views (especially the 2nd peak), just challenging enough but doable for older dog.
All the feel of a big mountain, steep elevation gains.. Perfect for an early morning get your blood moving warm up!! Or for an evening hike to watch the sunset. Darcie Trudeau
