Beautiful place. Go early to avoid the crowds. The Ames castle is beautiful and you can walk all around it. Wide main trails with offshoots here and there. LOTS of benches and places to rest. Loved it.

Great walk, wide trail. Damp due to past weeks weather. Some side trails were muddy. A little buggy, not excessive. Great spot for a walk!

The trail is in great condition with just a couple of areas with loose rocks. There weren’t too many people out. There are still people who think they are exempt from masks, make sure you remember yours. Overall, beautiful trail.

Some areas are still muddy from the rains. The May bugs have arrived and are annoying. Out of about 50 people passed, only 6 had masks and put them on while passing by.

Such a nice trail! Way too bumpy for a stroller on the south side of the pond, but the north side is perfect if you have wheels. Nice benches along the way for snacks and views.

Great hike, though we started out on Leach Pond trail and ended up looping back on Main trail back to Visitors Center. Great for dogs. Very rocky in some areas, but overall a great 2.5m hike.

Borderlands State Park is a large preserve in the towns of Easton and Sharon southwest of Boston. The natural areas encompass the Ames Mansion (circa 1910), and several movies have used the grounds or mansion for film scenes. The day we visited, the park was buzzing with families, and appears to be a well-known local attraction. We first stopped by the well-kept visitor center with exhibits and restrooms. From there we decided to walk around Leach Pond, heading first toward the edge of the pond to a stone lodge. This lodge was used in the filming of the 2008 movie "Shutter Island". Behind the lodge we found an area with benches and a great view of the main sections of the pond. We then continued on a wide, flat trail around the pond. A few sections had benches. At the boundary with the Upper Leach Pond the trail crosses a small bridge and follows a narrow strip of land to the other side of the pond. For a longer walk you could continue around the entire pond, pictured below left. From the other side, we emerged in a scrubby but very colorful area of the pond. We soon crossed a large field that was originally part of the Smith Farm (circa 1880) and came upon the old farmhouse, neatly restored, and some rusty farm tools and plows. The trail then followed a wide, straight path along a marshy area of the pond with plenty of ducks swimming near the shore. A forested trail eventually led back to the old Ames Mansion, pictured below. The stone house was solid and grand. Looking through the windows, we could see a large, formal library inside. After a tour around the house we headed back to the visitor center, passing some disc golf goals. Borderland State Park has a great mixture of scenery, history, and recreational opportunities. It was a real gem among the parks we've visited. We visited and reviewed all the state parks in MA. For photos and reviews, follow us at http://mastateparks.travel.blog

Great place to exercise and walk the dog. Great Pond views, love it when the lily pads are in bloom. If you live nearby definitely get the annual park pass.

First half typical New England park road with stunning pond views, second half amazing New England fields and farmland - would be a top notch foliage walk in the fall. Really enjoyed it. Easy terrain mostly packed gravel road.

Great easy family walk!

Great park with lots of well marked trails to choose from. The main trail tends to be crowded but venturing off onto the quieter trails provided more privacy. Lots of different terrain, hills, rocks, grass fields, forest, lakes, and streams. Dogs had a great day too! We did a 5 mile version but could easily accommodate those looking for a shorter or longer hike. Lots of quiet stops to picnic or let the dogs go for a swim.
