Really disappointing trail. If I went back again I would probably skip any sections close to Crooked Pond. I came to the trail via the Essex County Green Belt site. They have suggested hikes and included a Crooked Pond loop. They are NOT explicit enough about the flooding at the far end of the pond making a counterclockwise loop impossible (ie if you keep the pond to your left when you start in from Middleton rd.). The ECGA map for the property I believe is missing trails or somehow in accurate- it did not correspond to the actual trails at the far end of the pond while the AllTrails did. To complaints beyond poor mapping. The trail to the right side of the pond is VERY close to the water, with a rather steep embankment at times to your right. It means you are nearly forced into the water, with mud and bugs and all the things that come with wetlands- I had at least TEN snakes cross my path in a 3 mile hike. Not my thing. Beyond the trails close to the water, much is overgrown with high grass (ticks) or leaf debris that makes it impossible to find the trail. I at one point was very literally lost- seeing no trail behind or in front of me. I had to use the AllTrails map to find the trail again. There are lots of craggy rocks, roots, muddy sections, and MANY fallen trees which are big enough that I (5’7”) had to lay across to get over. The very brief section of fire road is pleasant which is why I’m giving it two stars- one of the most confusing, stressful, unpleasant hikes I’ve had in a long time. The area is in massive need of trail maintenance and some thoughtful rerouting/new markings.

I did this hike late in the day around 5. The mosquitoes were out but bug spray kept them away. I took the left side around the pond. It was a bit of a nightmare as there were trees down covering the trails. That first mile was tough. The last three were an easy walk through the woods with some paths overgrown, muddy and rocky. The trails were fairly well marked.

This trail was a fun little hike, it took me three some different terrine but mostly small paths threw the woods.
