Starting at Lock 56 and extending 21 miles to Big Pool, the paved Western Maryland Rail Trail follows along the Potomoc River. Plans for an extension will take the trail 4.5 miles further west to the Indigo Tunnel and Little Orleans. The long term plan will extend the trail almost to Cumberland and will feature 6 bridges across the Potomac and 3 tunnels.
