A very rocky trail with several steep grades that cuts through a mature oak/hickory forest, including some small American chestnuts. Provides access to White Rocks, a series of cliffs overlooking the Monocacy and Potomac river valleys. Wildlife is abundant, including an occasional black bear.

I did the complete trail without veering off and I tracked it at 8.3 miles and it took me 3 hours and 50 min to complete. I was not prepared for the length of this hike due to this listing on this app, especially the comment from the lady that claims she did it in 2 hours. It’s a great trail though, some hills. My pup loved crossing all the little streams!

Went in late summer & connected a few trails to create a rigorous 10 mile loop. Great views, good workout. Some steep rocky sections but mostly well maintained. A good option for a variety of difficulty levels as there are tons of parking and trail options.

Easy trail. Great for introducing kids to hiking. Most segments would be good for trail running as well. Completed circuit with family in just over 2 hours.

nice autumn hike on an 80 degree Indian Summer day. Saw no one else on this particular trail, on a Monday.

Nice trail, especially if you want to avoid the crowds at the summit. It can be done in one full loop, or combine it with any number of intersecting trails for lots of loop possibilities. I combined it with the white and blue trails for a 9-mile hike.

I don't consider myself an avid hiker but this trail was enjoyable. It can get a bit confusing with all the intersecting trails but it was still good if you know where your going. Definitely great hike to take the kids and grandparents

We did the west side of the yellow loop then came back via blue/white to the bottom of the mountain.

Parking is (and isn't) as obvious as you'd think at the bottom of the mountain. Before you enter the park, there is a small parking lot at the intersection of Comus and Sugarloaf Mountain Road. We parked there, walked into the park and upon passing the park building, followed the path to the left. You'll find the Yellow trail head once you cross Sugarloaf Mountain Drive.

We didn't see this until we walked out, but at the entrance gate there are printed trail maps!

I have hiked every trail on the mountain with my young son. Some areas are difficult and he requires carrying, but this is our favorite local spot to hike.

If you have a full day and want a good workout, park at the bottom of the mountain and hike up. However, there is a parking lot near the summit that makes this a quick morning or afternoon hike. The available trails range from a light saunter on a cardiac-friendly trail to a steep climb up rocks.

We have seen a variety of wildlife on the trail, including a rattler once, so make plenty of noise and be careful where you stick your hands.

The trails get more crowded as the day goes on, so get there early!

There is a winery at the bottom of the mountain (you'll pass it on the way in) and a small local market where you can buy cider, produce, and fresh eggs. If you time your visit right, your kids can help feed the chickens.
