This trail is closer to 7 miles round trip. The path as shown above includes about half a mile that was badly overgrown and didn't appear to go anywhere. I did take the Shortcut Trail on my way back. That took me to the Lakeside Loop Trail. Going that route cut .2 miles off of the hike, and removed some of the elevation. Overall not a bad hike. I liked crossing the Mason Dixon line into Pennsylvania. The marker off to the left was cool. Not too impressed with the Evitt's Homesite. There wasn't much to see there.

While the rating is moderate. The first mile of the Hike to the shortcut trail should be considered Hard+. Boulders, Large Rocks all over trail and steep grades up to 40+%. We would recommend taking the lakeside loop to the shortcut trail up and back. The shortcut trail is a large path with an expected steep grade but level areas to regroup for beginners.

Not much to write home about on this trail. The grade is gradual and the trail is wide. Virtually no views through the trees. I could not find any of the remnants of the old home site. It is essentially a trail through a nice forest.

Fantastic view at top; MasonDixon line 1776 ... charming. Bottom part most challenging. The miles on my track are not accurate ... closer to 7.5 miles.

I only did part of this trail due to time constraints and ice. I'll definitely be back to complete it. Trail is well marked and easy to follow. I definitely enjoyed the scenery and pine trees.

Fantastic trail, but that last leg is a bit misleading. If you follow the power line back down to the valley you'll find it quickly ceases being a trail and becomes a tumble.

Ran it in the rain to the Md/Pa line had a blast. Thunder rolling through the valley. Getting above the rain clouds. It was slow going up and a bit faster coming down. Hiking or running it is worth the journey.

Pretty nice hike. Lots of varying terrain including a manmade waterfall surrounded by thick, lush vegetation. Would do it again.

This is a fun incline, but I like going down through the power line into the camping area rather than using Evitts as out and back. The power line is steep with lots of tumble, not for novice hikers. We started this trail at TON lot, on loop until the trailhead for Evitts just beyond the dam. Headed up the mountain, stopping at the home site, the MD market, and the view at the top. From the top, you can return back down the way you came, go over the power lines which leads into the camping area, or on down connecting to Buchanan State Forest. I have only done the power line down, but hope to explore the BSF side soon.

Steady incline with some interesting sections to figure out lines down/back up rocky face. Mason Dixon line marker was cool and a monument date stamped. Great view at the summit. Varied terrain to keep focused on.

Beautiful trail!! Steady incline all the way up , only steep in a couple spots! Great trail saw deer and a rat snake !! Mason Dixon line was awesome! Views from the top so worth the effort 4 miles up and 4 miles down took about 4 hours all together we stopped a lot to take photos!!

Nice trail with some rewarding landmarks at the top of the trail. I liked that there were some options of things to see at the top to make you feel rewarded for the work to get there. Pretty wide path into the mid section of the trail. Elevation is gradual with only light places of steep sections. Overall a nice trail.

Took Rocky trail from Dogwood campsite loop, Short trail to loop back on Lakeside trail. Short and beautiful with more fungi varieties than I've ever seen.

Took the lakeside loop trail and it was beautiful and easy. We hiked for almost 9 miles all the way around.

Parts of the trail are very nice, but there are several areas where you "walk through" civilization - people sunning on a beach, picnickers at the casino, shelter areas where parties are happening. Pretty awkward.

Great workout as it's a steady incline all the way to the top. I enjoyed the rocky terrain and beautiful view at the top.

I love this hike. No matter what season it is always beautiful. Fall is of course the best when the leaves are changing. The view from the top is amazing.

Terrific hike! The first mile in the hemlock forest was a bit over-grown, but I enjoyed the rocky terrain. The gradual uphill to the summit was easy on the knees, but still a great workout. The Mason-Dixon marker is VERY cool and the valley overlook at the summit is stunning. After coming off the mountain, I took the "lake trail" back to the car. My dogs really enjoyed cooling off in the lake after the hike.

From my campsite at Rocky Gap to the Pennsylvania line is 8.4 miles round trip. A lovely hike with a nice payoff at the top. Also got to meet a black bear!
