A very scenic 2.3 mile trail near Flintridge, Maryland Rachel Carson Conservation Park is about 2.3 miles long and located near Flintridge, Maryland. The trail is great for hiking and normally takes 1-3 hours. This hidden gem is densely populated by numerous species of wildlife, high quality forest and features spectacular rock and massive boulder out-cropping throughout the park. This area remains undeveloped for some of the best hiking trails around! The Hawlings River passes through the park and almost the entire hike is along this beautiful river. Rachel Carson offers 650 acres of undisturbed wooded parkland and trails surrounding the Hawlings River in upper Montgomery County. Trail Information Activity Type: Hiking Nearby City: Brookeville Length: 4-6 miles of natural surface trails Elevation Gain: Minimal Trail Type: Modified Loop Skill Level: Easy Side of Moderate Season: Year-round Amenities: This is a "conservation park," which means there are no bathrooms and no water available.

This was my first hike here. It's pretty easy but the trails are mostly very narrow. I can't say it's a pretty hike in the Fall but some of the main trail is along water. I ended up going to the end and had to turn around so okay attention to the map or you add another 1/2 to the total loop. mostly well marked.

This was a lovely afternoon stroll! The trail was very quiet and we hardly saw anyone else. There was a lovely creek that the trail followed for a bit and it was such a nice place to stop and relax. My only complaint is we had to constantly keep our heads down watching for horse manure!

A calm, moderate tough and shady trail. Dog and kids friendly. Horse trails also available. The meadows with beautiful and colorful wildflowers make this trail awesome.

very nicely maintained trail...several offshoots to the Howling River...be aware of roots waiting to trip the unwary...lol...excellent for a day hike...

Very nice short hike that I would say is more on the easy side than intermediate. Saw a lot of butterflies and a few birds. The area along the water was especially nice.

Beautiful hike with several small stream crossings. This is definitely more of an easy versus moderate trail. Most of the trail is clearly blazed with white/light blue (it was difficult to tell which color it was at certain points). It was pretty straightforward except for the return trip. As others have mentioned, there is no indication to turn around. You simply have to recognize you're at the end of the trail and turn around. If you want to follow the loop that's shown in this app's map, then you will want to take the Fern Valley Trail on return. This trail will take you to the Hidden Pond Trail, which connects to the Fox Meadow Loop that leads to the parking lot. All in all, a fun hike with lots of nature.

Beautiful with forest, meadow, and water. Mountain laurel in bloom. Watch out for horses, even on non-horse trail. Really muddy in places with blowdowns from recent (and past?) storms. Dogs loved it!

the weather was absolutely gorgeous. there are some sections of the trail closer to the river where you have large muddy patches that require some hopping from dry spot to dry spot, but vast majority was perfect. gorgeous views along the river

Very nice conditions.

Is such a beautiful place, I recommend this if you like natural trails. This place is a dog friendly, horse friendly. The trails might be a little confusing , so I’ll recommend take a picture of the map or take your phone with you in case you get a little lost. Love this place.

11-18, Nice hiking trail in Montgomery County. Unclear when to turn back around. Took us 1 hr 40 mins. Lots of birds & pretty water.

Stunning fall foliage and brookside hike. Only downside: inadequate signage, especially including indicators of which way takes you back to the parking lot.

Very short trails but nice for a quick jaunt with the pups. Mix of wooded areas and meadows. Bubbling streams and a small river make pleasant sounds while hiking. And the "hidden pond" was alive with croaking frogs (toads?). And the berry bushes were a pleasant surprise! But beware a LOT of poison ivy so use common sense and normal safety precautions.

Super easy to get to and dog friendly. Can get muddy during the winter/early spring thaw/freeze cycle. Also bit frustrating to run into several folks allowing their dogs to romp around off leash, especially when a couple of these dogs were not friendly and barked a lot. Would try again in the summer without a dog.

Great hike for the family and especially if you have a dog who loves to jump in the water. Bring bug spray!

Easy trail but very pretty and wooded, there is a really cool stream you can follow.

I'd say this is more easy than moderate. Maybe 2 hills, hardly any rocks or roots on the trail. It's like an easy quiet stroll through the woods which can be quite nice on the weekend. Bring bug spray, it's mosquito season, and I definitely was kicking myself for not planning ahead on that account.

Gorgeous trail! The trail is very well marked with pale blue blazes and sign posts to direct you where to go at crossroads. The only confusing point was the out and back portion. There isn't a marker to let you know that you need to turn around. You'll start seeing signs for private property and that's when you should turn around and head back the way you came. The trail offers great river views and some pretty cool rock formations. We will definitely be doing this trail again!
