Green Ash Trail is a 3.5 kilometer heavily trafficked loop trail located near Frederick, Maryland that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Recommend starting counterclockwise so trail starts across the road from lower parking lot. Steep, fast, narrow ascent leading up to pavilions, tea house, and crowded over looks. In season of COVID, masks necessary on moderately trafficked trail on beautiful Nov weekend. Trail follows park road, which is awful and tastes of exhaust fumes and why we gave this two stars. It then ascends into wide, loose, rocky trail with lovely views through trees and a nice hike through woods with less people. Lots of lovely rock formations. Gradual ascent back to parking lot. It’s a moderate effort family hike (not too hard, not too crowded).
It's a great hike but we got turned around near the north Frederick overlook. We somehow got off of the green trail and onto the black trail. It ended up being an out and back hike for us rather than a loop. Would like to try again and do the loop. Will probably start across the road as others have suggested.
This is a really nice, moderate trail. Parts are rocky and you’ll want to be mindful with all the leaves on the ground now. It’s challenging without being obnoxious. Well marked, not overly crowded. Really nice overlook at the top. Have done twice and will continue to go back.
*starting from lower parking lot* Less rocky than the black trail but overlaps black for the steepest portions which I am normally forced to walk part of. Passes one or two overlooks which are nice. This trail actually gets kind of confusing when you get near the top parking lot. The trail kind of disappears and picks back up near a pavilion by the small playground. Everything at the top kind of converges and takes you back to the bottom lot via that trail.
Rocky at the the beginning. Definitely some steep parts. Towards the end you walk along the road for a while. Overall good hike though. We extended our loop to go a little further.
a lot of loose rocky footings for long stretches of the trail, and can be tough to keep your balance. tread carefully. i went on a dry day so it is probably very slippery in the rain/wet. went on a friday and it was not busy. weekends are a zoo. even on Friday i had to park by high knob and start the trail from there since the lower parking area was full.
