At only 22 acres, Fountain Rock Park is too small for serious hiking. But for its small size, it's got so much to offer. History buffs will appreciate the historic lime kilns, old quarry site, and cabins that have been converted into program buildings and park offices. The Trout Pond offers fishing - almost year round - due to the fact that it's fed by one of Maryland's largest natural springs. You can find people fishing in February since the warmer spring water rarely freezes over. There's also a Nature Center that's free and open to the public on weekends. The park is perhaps best known for its wildlife viewing opportunities. Several varieties of turtles, including snappers, painted, red-eared sliders, and even diamondbacks are readily visible from the Quarry Pond boardwalk in the warmer months. It's also a great spot for birding, whether you're looking for waterfowl by the Trout Pond or watching the bird feeder stations from inside the nature center. It's a very accessible park that's great for families.
