Civil war bunkers, cannons, building and views! The perfect Civil war park without the crowds. Plenty of huge cannons to defend Washington on the Potomac river entry. Lots of cannon emplacements, interpretive signs, and real civil war bunkers! The ammo dump is currently off limits. There are great water views with a building by the water, and a short half mile hike to a view of the bridge crossing to Alexandria. This park is definitely a hidden jewel.

-instead of using the trailhead, use the secret trail entry point for more water views -walk down to see the building at waters edge -watch the sunset at point 13

If you start to the right of the fort model the trail is amazing. you get to see where the soldiers went in and the humongous cannons. There is also a beautiful trail that leads to a private little beach. However, if you make the mistake of going left down by the restrooms on that trail, get ready to get lost in the woods. On both trails I think the park has let people come in and trash it and they do not clean fallon trees off the trails. overall I enjoyed it because I got to spend a nice evening with my husband with a little adrenaline rush getting lost lol.

Easy for kids and pets. A little overgrown but going down to the beach had nice views. Very cool cannons.

Not too bad, very cool cannons that are accessible but be aware there is no fort!

Hard to follow trail. Looks like 3 distinct paths that lead to river. Each time a arduous climb back to the top. Great views of the river and the canons were very neat; unfortunately the canons are not on path. If you looking for a workout, this is the trail for you.

Very cool to find the Civil War ruins on this hike that feels like you’re charting your own course through history.

This “trail” was not marked at all. At all. There were tons of downed trees and trash... the trash was incredibly upsetting, not just a bit of litter or even stuff washed up from the river but people have been dumping there. We found a dresser and mattress, beer bottles everywhere and what looked like several trash bags that had broken. We had to meander and go what looked like off trail to get to the ruins. A lot of stuff we couldn’t figure out HOW to get to (literally no markers). It would be a beautiful place if it was cleaned and marked.

Decent trails for a quick quiet walk. I went with my dog in the middle of the day on Saturday, and didn't see another soul. Much more peaceful than the packed trails at Great Falls with the same breeze from being next to the water, and not too strenuous. No outstanding views or waterfalls, but you can peek over the edge down to the river to see some boats and and see National Harbor in the distance. Planes fly over head regularly which made for some cool pictures. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of glass on the trails headed down to the water. We didn't have any issues, but I think I'd be more cautious bringing my dog next time.

Ruins are fun to explore. This park feels somewhat forgotten, and there were many elements about it that seemed rather creepy. There are a lot of barely-used trails here so, despite its small size, there's a lot of potential to explore. Great views of DC and VA. Easy hike for children, though perhaps best to avoid some of the more overgrown areas. The Potomac washes up a lot of trash on the beach, which can be either sad or interesting, depending on your mindset.
