This is one of the newest trails in the Avalon Section of the Patapsco Valley State Park. - This loop is ideal for kids and seniors. - It starts off with a easy up hill grade on the New Ridge Extension trail, which follows a feeder stream. - When you head up it's the first trail on your RIGHT. The Capt. John Smith Loop Trail (GRAY) will levels off as you loop around. - The trail is fresh packed dirt and is also ideal for trail running or mountain biking. - If the weather turns bad you have the option of heading back down the old stone road which is much safer if the trails get muddy. - There is a new Capt. John Smith Exploration Marker in the location where he placed the original one back in 1608 - During his first trip exploring the Chesapeake Bay region he made it as far as the Patapsco River but he went the rest of the way up the river on his second trip..
