Getting There

Patapsco Valley State Park charges a fee to enter. The fee is $5 per vehicle. Please note that the parking at this trailhead is limited. Trail is remnants of old Alberton Road which led to the former mill town of Daniels, MD. The Textile Mill was established in the 1800s and survived until destroyed by flooding in 1972. There are still traces of the former Mill and foundations of Mill worker houses. A little past the trail end, there is a train bridge over the Patapsco and Daniel's Dam.

No facilities in the immediate area so take what you need and leave nothing behind.

Unguarded swimming is allowed except for 300 ft above and below dam. The area of the old Mill (opposite side of Patapsco from trail) is now occupied by private businesses and is posted no-trespassing.

Off I-70 take Exit 25B (Rt 29) towards Rogers Ave, make right on Rogers Ave for .5 miles, then left on Old Frederick Road. Follow Old Frederick Road until you cross steel bridge and follow onto Hollifeld Road until it ends, make left on Dogwood Rd, small parking area will be immediately past small bridge on your left. Trail head is about 100 yds from lot near private home.

Good trail, however hard to find and lots of gnats in your face region. The gps take your to the parking spots, you go down the drive way and will see a house on the right. There will be a sign to keep left, but you must stay straight to the right and go past the gate to start the trail. The dam is about 1.5 miles in.

Nice clear path, can get muddy but very easy to follow. Keep straight past the sign that says turn left the path is behind the gate best advice I got from the reviews.

Took our three kids out last weekend. Loved it. Limited parking though, walked down to the start of the trail by the house (isn’t far) and headed straight. Mostly paved, we took our stroller out because I forgot the carrier but we made it all the way to the end then turned around. Saw a lot of people along the way which was great to see. It’s probably going to be a regular for us.

Went Sunday afternoon around 2pm. We lucked out cause someone was leaving as we were pulling in. Very limited parking, space for about 10 cars. If parking is full, you could park by the train tracks. There’s a small parking lot right before you cross the blue bridge. If you park here, you have to walk to Alberton Road, it’s not that far. Once at Alberton, Trail head is past the house. Just keep going straight. There’s a sign that says stay to the left, this is not for the trail head. Trail head is behind the gate. Trail is mostly paved, saw some bikers and rock climbers. Very peaceful along the river. Not very busy. If you look at my recording, when we veer left off the trail is when we went down to the dam. You can get really close to the water this way. You’ll also see the church with graffiti all over it. Looks like some folks use this spot as a meeting place. We chose to turn around after 2.5 miles, but you can make this a much longer hike by just going straight along the river.

Loved this trail! The kids really enjoyed themselves too. The little ones (ages 3-6) were a little tired on the way back but all in all we enjoyed the views, the waterfall, and got some really neat pictures with the abandoned church/ graffiti. We will definitely go back.

With snow and ice the trail is very soggy, but still beautiful. We hiked up to the ghost town church, a mere 5 minutes up the hill, and it was well worth it. Easy walking path out and back.

Appealing River walk. Today, after the snows and melting, a bit icy and muddy. Quiet with few others. Parking is limited; we got lucky.
