Getting There

This is an extremely scenic trail through Riverside Cemetery and along the banks of the Mousam River to Indian’s Last Leap, a scenic spot, and swimming hole, where legend has it that a Native American chasing a settler fell to his death. The trail through woods is very rugged with rocks and roots in the footpath marked with green blazes.

Great trail. The views and sound of the water were great. The only downfall was the trail was overgrown in parts and we had to careful of thorns.

Super buggy so wear bug spray. But I liked the walk! The only part that was iffy was having to walk through prickly bushes before getting to the road to the cemetery

Overall I found this trail disappointing. It was buggy and overgrown to the point we could not find where the trail continued once we were about .75-1mile in. Eventually we found where the trail continued, but had to go through some pricker bushes and then got to a bridge that some of the floor boards had fallen through. With a 30lb kid in a backpack and a 4 year old we decided it wasn't worth the risk and turned around. The walk along the river was nice, but there was A LOT of litter and broken glass. I would not recommend this, especially for families.

Great for individuals and family. Trails follow along the Mousam River, which during the spring, can have a significant flow of water. Trails are easy and can be at times, buggy. Plenty of opportunities to capture landscape and long exposure imagery. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is there are portions that youth party and along with this, trash is left behind and rocks are graffitied.

Excellent trail for the woods portion, although lots of graffiti and litter at points. Be aware if you do the full loop you end up walking through a cemetery, subsidized housing developments and along a main road, the woods is only half of the loop.

Very pretty hike. Didn’t make it to the end because it was too buggy. Mosquitos everywhere. Trail was marked well

Very easy walk through the woods. Some of it was a little overgrown but wasn’t too bad as long as you wear long pants.

I would definitely recommend this trail. Very peaceful and scenic. We did the green- blaze main trail. It takes you along the River, over a couple of foot bridges and also along the cemetery. The trail does go along the road at one point, and it’s a busy Main Street so I’m not sure I’d take the kids that way. But it was a great place-a playground and small beach also.

What a little gem of a hike. Well-maintained trails with several bridges, cool waterfalls and swimming holes, lots of yummy blackberries, and varied terrain. It's nice to have a new hike right near home.

I LOVE this trail! I walk it on a regular basis with my dog - right from home, even (lucky me). Such a beautiful trail, very easy to walk, with lots of beautiful sights. You can bring your bathing suit because there are places to swim. It is extremely buggy and muddy in the spring and sometimes in the summer as well. Fall foliage is spectacular. There are portions of the trail that become difficult to follow, because old paths which run semi-parallel to current paths are getting overgrown, and the marking isn't always clear. However, if you follow the river, you will never be lost. You will not regret this walk. It is also part of the Mousam Trails, which runs throughout all of Sanford and Springvale. You could literally walk for days.

If you follow the actual red lines on the trail map you don’t walk through the cemetery. The trail ends at the cemetery and you turn around to head back. The trail overall is fun, has some good ups and downs. It reaches the top of a local icon “American Flag Rock”. Which is a local “cliff” that can be viewed from a local swimming area across the river. There was some broken glass, graffiti ect but nothing surprising. Definitely not flat and be prepared with good shoes for some wet areas. The river and boulders it followed are great scenery.
