Getting There

A steep climb to the top of this small mountain with wonderful views out over the Atlantic and surrounding Acadia hills The Beehive Trail is a very popular moderate to difficult out and back or loop trail using iron rungs on ledges of exposed cliffs, and is very steep, offering spectacular views of Sand Beach and the surrounding area at Acadia National Park. Start just north of and across the One way loop road from the Sand Beach parking area, climbing steps and through the forest to some exposed fairly flat rocky areas and a tall cairn of rocks marking your next steps. Be sure to look for the light blue (Carolina Blue) trail markers as the trail can be quickly lost in your enthusiasm to scale the cliffs. Stay on trail as strategically placed iron rungs, bridges and hand and foot holds take the technical part out of the climb. Once at the top you can opt to go down the back side and make it a loop or go down the way you came.

Ample parking at the Sand Beach parking area. Save some time by parking on the upper lot just past the main Sand Beach parking area. Sand Beach is served by the shuttle buses and has good restroom facilities.

Acadia National Park P.O. Box 177 Bar Harbor, ME 04609-0177 207-288-3338

Parking: From the Park Loop Road in Acadia park at the Sand Beach Parking area. There is a $20 fee to get into the National Park.

From Boston take I-95 north to Augusta, Maine, then Route 3 east to Ellsworth, and on to Mount Desert Island. For an alternate route, continue on I-95 north to Bangor, Maine, then take Route 1A east to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, take Route 3 to Mount Desert Island. The Trailhead is on the east side of Mount Desert Island. From Hulls Cove Visitor Center take the park road to the one-way loop to park at the Sand Beach Parking area. Trailhead is 100 feet north (just before) of the entrance to the parking area.

Hike this morning in fog, so rocks and railings were wet and slippery. not for the faint of heart and not for kids. I'm 56 and my inner ears are definitly betraying my balance and confidence at heights. not a fan of cliff edges and ledges and this trail has plenty of both. In most cases there are well placed rails and ladders, in a few spots there are no obvious handholds when coming up over ledges. Follow trail blazes as there is one section about 2/3 of the way up where you could easily climb up a vertical pitch with good hand and foot holds....lucky to shuffle around a corner and find a trail blaze there. if I had gone up I likely would have been stuck. you need to be able to pull yourself up, and get your knees up to your chest, if you have any mobility/joint issues take the back way up. I wouldn't take a kid under 16 up this one. finally it's a great trail! definitely coming back when it's clear and dry. You can definitely die up here, someone had to be rescued after a fall the day prior to my visit. I took the backside down a bit and went out to the bowl, the loop was closed for maintenance, definitely worth the 5 minute walk. then took gorham down to the parking lot, and walked the seaside trail back to sand beach for a 4 mile morning. Obviously I'm a very cautious hiker and my instinct is to rush through scary spots, really good to slow down and take your time on the sketchy parts. Bonus tip! a couple of hundred yards up the trail is a steel ladder across a gap in the ledge and this really starts the climbing....This is a great barometer of the trip, if that little ladder gives you the shakes, simply turn around...it doesn't get better after that! The entire cliff-face climb probably only takes 15 minutes.

Beautiful trail! We hiked up when foggy and couldn’t see anything below, but just doing the hike alone was worth it! I was much more nervous that I would have been without fog, because it does make the rocks slippery. We hiked up the beehive, then followed the trail on the backside down which you needed to scramble over rocks to go down- but much better than climbing down the ladders! At the summit, just continue hiking past the trees and you’ll start to see trail markers going down the backside.

Took the family up in the fog and after 10 minutes at the summit we were blessed with a gorgeous view.

The view of the ocean meeting the mountains from the top is to die for! It’s a tough one but not too tedious as it is relatively short.

Disclaimer: foggy day when we did this hike so couldn’t see anything. Personally thought the “scares” aren’t that bad angels landing is worse however if you do have a fear of heights I recommend taking the stairs around counter clockwise if you want to see the view without the vertigo and climbing. Technically it’s a fun challenge. Don’t skip the bowl very pretty.

Challenging due to incline/climb. Go early to avoid crowd. Amazing views.

Great trail, lot of people (wait in line the entire way up). Back side (way down) has shade and much easier (no line). Multiple places to sit and have a nice view (big rocks, exposed to the sun)

What a hike!!! As a fairly “moderate” hiker, I was slightly intimidated by the reviews about Beehive. Though challenging at times, it was certainly doable! And worth it!! The train head is directly across from the Sand Beach parking lot. If that parking area is full, there is another parking lot a little further up the road and is about a 5-7min walk to the trailhead. When in doubt, follow the crowd! It’s a popular spot. We started the trail at 10:15am on a holiday weekend. I would recommend that time or earlier as the crowd picks up throughout the late morning/early afternoon. It is indeed a short hike, as others have mentioned. My friend and I did the loop (including the “Bowl”) and with plenty of breaks, it took us 2.5 hours. The trail is well marked with blue blazes and multiple signs along the way. There are rock scrambles and iron rungs but all were manageable if you’ve hiked some moderate trails before. When you get to those sections, you may have to wait in line with others for a bit since only so many people can go at once. This provides a great opportunity to stop and take in the views! Definitely some cliff side steepness so if heights are a big fear, I’d look at some pictures to see what you’re in for. Incredible views at the summit. Such a rewarding experience. Definitely a must do for anyone visiting Acadia!

My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this hike, and would love to do it again. The views while climbing the ledges were stunning. It’s definitely a major challenge for those who are afraid of heights, but not physically arduous.

The trail was amazing! The views are worth every minute. The climb has a few small path on the face of the rocks and climbing is involved. My favorite short hike!

Wouldn't recommend this hike if you're afraid of heights. Lot's of vertical climbing using metal rungs. Well worth the hike for the view of Sand Beach below.

Spectacular views!! Quick hike to the top and not as scary as I had expected. Started at 8:45am to beat the crowds which was a good idea. We only saw two other couples on the Beehive.

Really awesome climb with a great view! Bridges and ladders were really cool, definitely not for someone afraid of heights. Relatively quick hike, and VERY crowded in the summer. Be prepared to park far away, and have to wait for groups in front to clear the obstacles.

This trail was very well maintained and marked. The iron rungs and steep nature of the first part of the trail made it a challenge but still manageable. Went at 8:30am and were one of just a few people on the trail.

This was recommended by several people to hike for our first time at Acadia and it did not disappoint. Very fun hike with great views and a little bit of climbing via iron rungs. Highly recommend.
