This Trail is described as an out-and-back 3.4 mile trail. the trail markers take you in a loop that is between 4-5 miles. this is easily seen if you look at people's recordings. I didn't make one! I went from Shephard's Farm into Witt Swamp and followed the black and white arrows. It was a little confusing in that the names on the signs didn't always line up with the names on the map. For example there are signs that say Half Witt Trail but nothing on the maps say that. it's clearly marked but if you are expecting a 3.4 you might be surprised if you keep following the signs and come out at nearly five miles. the trails were clear and wide. The snow is packed down pretty hard which made a few spots a little bit slippery. I had stabilicers in my pack but it wasn't really bas enough to put them on. Lots of signs of wildlife! My dog kept very busy sniffing prints in the snow. Giganic, fun animal sculptures at Shepard's Farm.

HikingGreat!

Great trails, we only did a small portion but they were well groomed and very quiet. The dogs loved it. We will definitely be back! There’s also a nice mowed grass area near the sign that would be a nice spot for a picnic.

Great shady trail thru woodlands and bog. Well maintained with boardwalk thru boggy area. During wet, warm weather bugs could be a problem.

Very nice hike. You can go a lot further than what is on the AllTrails map. There’s a whole other loop that’s been added on. Also note that there’s a little nature trail right near the parking lot that’s worth a little side trip. It has a lot of outdoor sculptures and is quite pretty.

The trails are confusing. They need to be better marked and tell you how long they are. It would also be good to know the Shepard's and Witt's trails connect at one point. I definitely enjoyed the walk but I was nervous I was lost at some points. It is a long walk.

The parking area is blocked off and we parked along the road as we saw other cars doing. The trail is pretty easy and great for kids. Added bonus is the wooden artwork at the beginning of the trail

did this hike on easter wicked easy which was perfect for my 3mo old puppy and my 10yr old son. would recommend for a family with young kids and/or people with young pups to get them ready for real hiking in the future. nice for a simple local hike.

As of Jan 2020 SHEPARDS FARM PRESERVE has a connecting trail North through WITT SWAMP PRESERVE to WITT SWAMP EXTENSION (a loop). These described on the handout from "Western Foothills Land Trust Preserve Trails". Very enjoyable field and woods experience. Various distance measurements from the handout-map were not clear to me. Beginning and ending at the Crockett Ridge Road parking lot was a 2.5 hour circumnavigation. See AllTrails.com WITT'S END TRAIL.

Hiking

We enjoyed a quiet hike through the woods today at the Shepard Farm Preserve. We spent most of our time on the Crockett Trail but also followed the Freeman Trail down to the edge of the lake. The trails are well maintained and very easy to follow. After returning to the kiosk at the parking lot, we realized we could have taken the Witt's End trail and added a bit more distance to our hike. Next time, no doubt. This trail system will be a great place to snowshoe in the winter.

First to Review

Easy to follow on a well-traveled trail over 8 inches of snow. Very dog-friendly according to a local snowshoer that I ran into along the trail. More trails are being developed for the coming year and will link up with another trail system.
