Surprised there are no reviews here: as this is our favorite loop up/back to Penobscot - but only if the Jordan Cliffs Trail is reopened after peregrine falcon breeding ends in August. The first ascent on Spring Trail is a little intense as it zigzags thru the cliffs with iron handrails to assist - but its not that long before the cliffs end, and you have gradual climb on the spine. Definitely pause in this area to enjoy a break and the excellent views over Jordan Pond House, and the crowds below lunching on the great lawn. You've reached one the best scenic viewing spots of the island (without the crowds who drive to Cadillac summit). After scaling Penobscot's summit, continuing to Sargent summit is optional (I find it adds about an hour). But definitely do not miss a return on the Jordan Cliffs with the incredible views over Jordan Pond, and out to Seal Harbor, Little Long Pond, and the Cranberry Islands. You can enjoy this views so much better while descending on this trail which has its iron rungs and handrails to add to excitement as you pass over exposed cliff bands, old wooden bridge, gnarly tree roots and iron ladder. Lots of fun variety on this descent.
