The Hawk Mountain Trail is for foot traffic only and proceeds 0.7 miles south from the trailhead to the town-owned Hawk Mountain lookout. Grades are gentle to moderate and the surface is mostly dirt with some loose rock. The length and relative gentleness of the ascent make this trail an excellent experience for the whole family. At the summit, broad cliffs with panoramic southerly views offer a spectacular picnicking or birdwatching spot. This hike is a two-for-one deal: It is really quick and fairly easy and has a jaw-droppingly beautiful view at the top. Make sure you don’t miss the view! After a .7-mile climb up a rough road, you reach an open clearing with a fire pit (and often broken glass, be careful), and the trail continues to your right. Continue on just a little way to the open ledge.

The path/road is wide and rocky. Some exposed rock and some smaller loose ones that could make for uncertain footing. There is a LOT of logging going on, and it looks fairly devastated in spots. Once you reach the clearing, walk straight ahead to the rocky ledge for some really great views of Shawnee Peak and the surrounding areas.

Last summer I would hike this after a day at work. I plan on doing it again this summer and doing a sunrise hike. LOVE the views and has pushed me to do some more hiking.
Update: A week or two ago I hiked up and they had cleared some trees and I'm kind of disappointed. It weaves in and out of the trail but is usually visible from the trail. I will continue to go because it is such a beautiful view and a good workout if you go at a brisk pace.

Even though this hike is short, the views at the top are worth the trip. Pack a lunch and enjoy the peace and quiet.
