Dorr Mountain via Wild Gardens to Schiff to Emery Path is a 3.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Bar Harbor, Maine that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Acadia National Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. If you are entering on foot, horse, or bike the fee is $15 per person. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $55.
Great and challenging trail with awesome views. Slippery toward the top!
All stairs going up the side of Dorr mountain with exposed cliff on the side, wouldn’t recommend for clumsy people like myself since I did take a tumble coming down the stairs really banging myself up (thank you to my family and the nice hikers along the way)! Near the top you’ll get to a sloped area that’s steep but like ten mins from the summit. Mostly the same view the whole hike until you get to the top where you can mostly see Cadillac. An enjoyable hike, but there are other ones in Acadia that offer so much of the Maine charm.
Flawless AM hike after sunrise on Cadillac. Passed 5 hikers the entire time!! Lots of cut in stairs and over granite to the summit. Awesome views.
I think the other reviews went up a different way, but our family went counter clockwise. We started going around the wild gardens boardwalk and then came to the start of Door Mountain. After deliberating a few seconds, we decided to go up Door. This trail had us ascend the full 1200+ feet in 0.9 miles up the rock faces with very few steps. I could only count a couple of times where there was a leveling out of the trail for more than two or three steps. It is literally straight up the rock face of the mountain. The fog that morning made the incline very slick, and because of the direction we went the views were mostly behind us as we were trying to make it up the mountain. We came down using the Schiff to Emery path were there were tons of steps and some narrow passages, but very few overlooks. This trail almost felt hard for the sake of being hard. I am glad that we did it as George Dorr is practically the reason Acadia exists, but I would definitely attack this trail clockwise starting with emery and Schiff and coming down Dorr. I believe that would make this moderate, but for us it was definitely harder than Acadia Mountain that is listed as hard.
It was a strenuous hike up hundreds of stairs for someone who is not in good shape and over 40 who sits at a desk all day and gets little exercise. We didn’t make it to the summit this trip because we started too late in the day and parts of the sheer face at the top were wet which is equivalent to a slip and slide even with good hiking boots. It was tough on the knees and legs. This is one of my favorite and challenging hikes in Acadia. The payoff of the breathtaking views are worth the strenuous hike up. Start earlier in the day before 2pm in the Fall so you have plenty of time to enjoy the views at the top and take your time going up and back while the sun is still shining. A must do though. If possible go on a day it hasn’t rained 24 hours before or when the sun is out to dry up any rainfall. Enjoy the hike!
