Carter Nature Preserve Loop is a 1.8 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Surry, Maine that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Note: Dogs are not allowed on the Woods Trail portion of the loop. The variety of habitats makes for a good birding trail. Go at mid-tide for good shorebird sightings. Plenty of parking at the top of Loop Trail.
There is another hike across the road. Use this same parking lot.
I imagine it's wonderful any time other than high tide. The trail very shortly was entirely under water! my dogs & I tried to stomp through brambles to see if we could find a place where the trail wasnt submerged but ended up in someone's back yard, cleaning up a lot of broken glass & trash along the way. Yikes. We may try again in the future, at low tide
Amazing trail! Mostly flat with short steep sections. There are a lot of roots along the trail. When the tide is out, there is so much to explore along the rocky coastline! Nice benches for resting and taking in the view. Sometimes it’s nice to stop and soak it all in. I would highly recommend this trail for all ages and abilities!
The trail is Easy to moderate, shady with intermittent sun in the woods. It has benches along the way and a beautiful shore line in the middle of the trail.
Great short hiking trail. A lot of fun with kids. It changes scenery and has beautiful views on a sunny day. Bring bug spray!
Lovely trail through largely evergreen woods, so it's green even in early spring. Many benches with water bowls for dogs along the first section, some beautifully maintained bits like a staircase once you go back into the woods. The last section (that's not along Cross Rd) goes along a rocky beach and is not that well marked. Just keep going till you reach some rock steps. Very wet after a rain, in fact parts of the trail were basically a stream. The last bit as the trail rejoins the road needs some TLC. Had to climb over a downed tree and bushwhack through some shrubs.
This a very nice and easy to accomplish trail. We highly recommend going at low tide. You will notice from our recording that we chose to depart the trail and walk the shore since it was low tide. The rocky shore is the highlight of the trail.
i took mt first and second grade class on a hike here. Perfect for my group.
