We did this trail with our 3.5 year old in a pack, and our 8 year old.
We arrived just about 8am and was able to grab a parking spot right by the trailhead. It worked out because we caught many people that hiked up for the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain and parking was plentiful.
Our 3.5 year old was able to hike much of the way up North ridge on his own. This is a hike that has amazing views around every turn. We loved finding the blueberry bushes ripe for the picking!
The summit was pretty non-eventful because of all of the people. We didn't stop long before heading down the South ridge trail. To find the South ridge trail from summiting, cross the parking lot and go to the right. It'll be on the opposite side of the street.
The South ridge trail down was a bit steep, with one rung to climb down (or climb up if you are coming the opposite way) The trail finishes flat. If you need to catch the shuttle back to North ridge, cross the street and follow signs for the Blackwoods campground. Note: You CAN flag down shuttles (and they will often times stop!) If you see one, flag it down, as they only stop once an hour at the campground.
We caught the Blackwoods Shuttle back to the Bar Harbor Village green and then caught the shuttle back to North ridge. You could easily stop and have lunch in the village before heading back to your car.
This is definitely a hike to make sure you have logistics down to get back to your car. Make sure you have the shuttle schedule screenshotted so you know when to expect the next shuttle, as phone service was iffy.
This hike is definitely doable for kids that are hikers and have experience on the trail. It is completely worth it and we will definitely be back to do it again next year.
