Cadillac Mountain is the tallest mountain on the eastern seaboard of the United States. The true summit is to the left where the South Ridge Trail opens onto the gravel access road. Look for 2 survey benchmarks established by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1856 and the 1954. The South Ridge Trail is a gradual climb, but it has the advantage of not coming close to the Cadillac Summit Road until the end. The trail briefly descends to a small pond called The Featherbed, where there is a wooden bench for taking a break and enjoying the pond.

Just plain gorgeous.

The Cadillac South Ridge trail was moderate and an enjoyable hike. Eagle Cragg is worth the little side trip. Once you get to Gorge Path the hike earns its Hard rating. It is a gorge, so you will be going down steep rocky terrain. Then you go back to moderate on the A Murray Young Path. Back to Hard up Cannon Brook where you will be going up rocky wet terrain. Finish back on South Ridge trail.

This mountain is one of my favorites so far, once you reach the top the view is so beyond beautiful, I'd say this is a good hike if you enjoy climbing rocks,a bit challenging but it has some nice elevation gain. I would rate this hike as hard, but totally worth it.

I would not characterize this hike as difficult. Rather it is just long. Today, a perfect winter day, we hiked/snowshoed nearly to the summit before retracing our steps back down and enjoying the view in front of us. Great day, great company and beautiful views to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

There are almost no bad hikes on Mount Desert Island. The Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail is one of the longest and has the most elevation gain. Despite that, it is a fairly easy hike. We did it on a cold and windy day and turned back about a half mile short of the summit because we were there to hike together and enjoy the day, not to accomplish some kind of goal unless the goal was to have fun, which we did. The snow was deep in the wooded lower section with drifts to two feet or more. As always on MDI, the areas above tree line were swept of snow by the constant wind. The weather was spectacular except for the higher elevation wind.

Probably the most beautiful hike I've done to date - we went a few days ago when the weather was expected to be cloudy, but it ended up snowing about a quarter of the way up... luckily no ice. But the views to the summit, and the different types of scenery, were just stunning. We were walking through the clouds for a fair part of it. Absolutely recommend.

Hard/strenuous is the right rating for this one. Although it's not steep-uphill the whole time, it's definitely uphill with uneven terrain. I attempted to do this three years ago when I was 100lb heavier and couldn't get even 1/4 of the way. Bring water, and if you're hiking in the winter, be prepared... ice could get bad, as the majority of the Trail is on rock. Follow the cairns!

Absolutely recommend.

Great views on way up and back, could get to the .2 miles marker and turn around, avoiding the crowd that drove up to the top.
