3.6 miles is entirely misleading. this is the distance to the top of the cliffs— the west peak— which has NO view. however, if you continue to the right at the top of the cliffs, you will eventually reach the east peak which boasts truly breathtaking, panoramic views. this extends the total trail distance to ~6.2 miles, but it’s really really worth the extra distance. truly beautiful hike.

Beautiful trail with lots of variation. The beginning is a bit muddy but it gets better quickly. The rapid ascent to the cliffs is a bit of a challenge, but also doesn’t last long. We highly recommend going on to East Peak, the 360 degree views are spectacular. Took a dip at Schoodic beach after!

We did a loop with 2 teenagers and 1 fur baby in a hot buggy day 1 week ago. The black mountain cliff trail is easy for us but hard for water dog since no stream or pond for her to cool down. Fortunately I did bring enough water that day. The summit of black mountain has awesome view. Enable to see it, you need to keep moving even you feel you may already reach the top and then the trail seems directing you downhill. The later half hike towards redman’s beach was nice due to breeze and streams.

Great hike but would not reccomened for young climbers. East side of loop is much steeper than west. Overall, well groomed but with minimal views. Still a great hike but would refrain from bringing kids under 7yrs. Would rate this a moderate trail.

I loved this hike! It was a lot longer than I expected. I started at the parking lot by the beginning of the trail to Schoodic Beach and then went to East peak and ended at Schoodic Beach. Such a rewarding, beautiful hike. Good mix of rocky and wooded.

Loved this one! It has all you would expect from an excellent hike. Nice trail head, decent climb, great summit area having a 360° plateau view, decent descent and a beautiful beach + swimming on the way back. Only a little more difficulties would be great. I still would rate it moderate compared to other trail in this community. We saw just one person on the hike, a little more on the beach (in peak season). Make sure you proceed to the west summit, the east summit has no views at all. The recorded trail is wrong here, its too short.

Quiet easy trail. Lots of options to extend to other peaks.

Well marked trail with fantastic views. Trailhead for the east peak is not at the Donnell pond parking area. Instead of heading left toward Schoodic Mountain on the access road, go straight for 2.1 miles. a small parking area will be on the right. Trail begins a bit further up the road on the left. The Big Chief trail connects to the other peak and Donnell Pond as well as another trail to Caribou Mountain.

Nice hike should be rated moderate especially if you think Schoodic Mountain is hard (NOT). Great view east and south

Far exceeded my expectations. Beautiful views of Frenchmans bay lakes forests and mountains. A 360 view from the top. A great family hike with no difficult areas. The trail markers could be better so extra attention is needed

We loved this hike and will do it again!! And our Chocolate Lab, Houdini, was able to make the climb with no probem. I would really urge everyone to go to the East Peak for the best views all around! I'm not sure if it's still Franklin or Sullivan but in that area. It can be hard to find if your not familar with the area. Basically Off route 1 in Sullivan to 183 , Tunk Lake Rd about 4miles down on the left, it's part of the Donnell Land Preserve and there is a sign but the trees hide it till you are almost past. It's a dirt road that is well maintained. It forks you can go left to Schoodic Mtn which is also a great hike or go right to Black Mtn. There's a small parking spot for 2-3cars. We loved this hike and will do it again. Beautiful 360degree view. You have to go all they way to the East Peak. If feels like your going down the other side but you actually go to the other peak and it's so worth the trek. I bet fall will be beautiful!!

Overall a moderate hike. Many easy walks through the woods with two steep sections. Not many views, but also not crowded

Fairly easy hike, my 2 labs were able to complete the hike as well. This was a much shorter hike than I am used to, I'm sure could be made longer by going to the cliffs and the summit. Great view of the area...lakes, mountains, windmills.

The trail head can be difficult to find if you aren't familiar with the area. Nice hike with beautiful views. We took the trail down to the beach before looping back up to the parking lot, a nice way to end the hike. Lots of leaves on this trail so good footwear and careful footing is essential to avoid slides.

The hardest part was finding the trail. The map at the bottom of the trail is not labeled very well so be cautious when you are hiking. The hike up is a good workout, if you are older or have little kids it could be a little difficult. It's a very pretty hike and once you get to the top you will not be let down, amazing view.

Absolutely loved this trail. Amazing views. Glad we had help with directions from a local. It was way down a dirt road off from a back road.
